Black and white maps and illustrations, 105pp, signature of Japanese historian Dr.Richard Mason on front free endpaper, dustjacket minor scuffing, a very good copy. In the reformation of 1868 wjhen Japan's capital city Tokyo began changing from feudal to modern dress, its population was less than one million. Between 1920 and 1960 the nations's urban population swelled from only 18% to 63.5%, and by 1962 Tokyo had swelled to more than ten times the size of a century earlier. The emergence of the Japanese city was not a new phenomenon by any means, though, since its origin can be traced back some 1300 years. The major cities distributed throughout the nation originated from the castle towns and port cities of some 350 years before or earlier.
