Hardcover. Condition: Good +. Early printing. 24mo, 5 3/2" tall, 286 pages + 6 engraved plates. (Part of the Cooke's edition of the British poets). A good+ copy overall, covers are worn at all extremities, spine chipped at top edge, fore-corner tips worn through to boards; the hinges are cracked but secure, binding solid, with light foxing and moderate yellowing, paper still supple.

Leather. Condition: Good. Unamed (illustrator). Two volumes of The Poetical Works of the Reverend Dr. Edward Young bound as one volume. Bells' second edition. Edward Young (June 1681 5 April 1765) was an English poet, best remembered for Night-Thoughts. Originally part of a four volume set, this volume contains two volumes only bound into one. In a full calf leather binding with gilt borders to the boards. Externally, a trifle rubbed. Front board is held by cords only. Rear joint is starting but firm. Front hinge is tender. There is a bookplate and an ink inscription to the front pastedown. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean with some age-toning. Good. book.

Teilweise unaufgeschnittenes Exemplar. Edward Young (Geb. 3. Juli 1683 in Upham in Hampshire; gest. 5. April 1765 in Welwyn in Hertfordshire) war ein englischer Dichter. Als Sohn eines Geistlichen geboren, widmete sich Young dem Studium der Rechte in Oxford. Seine ersten Gedichte The last day 1713 und The force of religion blieben ohne Wirkung. 1719 ging er nach London, wo er in den geistlichen Stand trat und durch ein Lobgedicht auf König Georg II. 1728 eine Stelle als Hofkaplan erwarb. Zwei Jahre später legte er diese Stelle jedoch nieder und wurde Pfarrer in Wetwyn in Herfordshire. Das Geld, das ihm seine ersten, 1726 erschienenen, Satiren eingebracht hatten, verlor Young bei dem sogenannten Südseeschwindel.
