About this Item: and commenting at length on a recent visit, in an autograph letter, signed 18 January 1864, from Mobile, Alabama, to "My Dear Madam," clearly a relative. 4to. 3 pages, approximately 500 words, in part: "Mobile is now in a state of considerable excitement, apprehending a speedy attack from the enemy, who have a large number of vessels, and forces, off Dauphin Island & the coast. They have been shelling the shores, with the design it is thought of making a landing, east of Fort Morgan. Our army has been much increased here within a few days. I do not think the enemy can take this city. The authorities have advised all non-combatants to leave & some families are doing so, but the greater part have nowhere to go. I shall stay here to the last, and render all service I can." Meek graduated from the University of Alabama in 1833, read law, served as a local official, and then was appointed federal attorney in Mobile. Accepting a position with the Mobile Daily Register in 1848, he spent the rest of his life devoted to literary matters; "his efforts covered the fields of journalism, oratory, history, essays, and poetry" (DAB); his best known works are Romantic Passages in Southwestern History (1857) and the poem "The Red Eagle." In the mid-1850s he was instrumental in the founding of Alabama's public school system. Folded for mailing, ink a little faded, but very good. (1381). Seller Inventory # 54423
