First edition. 132 pp., map, many illustrations (including several full-page) from engravings and photographs; 8vo, original russet morocco with elaborate embossed gilt front cover design, same design in blind on rear cover, later cloth spine; original floral patterned endpapers, all edges gilt. Pacific Press Book Bindery sticker affixed to front pastedown. Scarce and early promotional/historical volume describing to potential settlers the many assets of Pasadena and environs. Usually found in decorative wrappers and quite rare in this leather binding, likely one of very few deluxe copies. Text concludes with 6-page directory and map of Pasadena. Pages 64-66 contain an article by John Muir - "The Sierra Madre Mountains" - excerpted from a larger article that appeared the previous year in Century Magazine as "The Bee-Pastures of California." Cowan II, p.602; Kimes #157; Rocq #4610; Quebedeaux (Prime Sources of California and Nevada Local History 151 Rare and Important City, County and State Directories 1850-1906) #23.
