About this Item: Anmol Publications Pvt. Ltd., 1998. Hardcover. Condition: New. The behaviour of the international monetary arrangements and evolution of economists ideas about it in the period of Second World War make a fascinating study of the interaction of events and ideas. The establishment of the Bretton Woods system was a triumph of ideas in an attempt to prevent what has gone wrong with events in the thirties competitive devaluations, beggar-try-neighbour, trade policies and an unacceptably high price in terms of domestic unemployment from adherence to the gold standard. The shift to more fixable exchange rates has changed the nature of models relevant for analysis of international monetary phenomena. It no longer makes sense to ask what determines changes in international reserves on the assumption that the price of foreign exchange rate. New models of exchange rate determination have, therefore, not only incorporated the changed institutional structure of flexible exchange rates, but have also included economists new insights into the role of expectations. This book reports on the continuing exciting development of new thinking about exchange rates. Printed Pages: 392. Seller Inventory # 31623

About this Item: Anmol Publications Pvt. Ltd., 1993. Hardcover. Condition: New. The economic aspects of Education like the costs, benefits or the rate of return did not sufficiently engage the attention of the classical and neo-classical economists. They accorded only a peripheral importance to economic considerations of educational activity. They also treated educational expenditure as social investment and allowed them to be determined residually. The reasons for indifference towards economics of education on the part of the early economists arise from their feeling that they cannot be impartial and objective in the treatment and analysis of an all embracing subject like education. Economics of education is not merely financing and costing of educational places. It is concerned with the question of the impact of education on such phenomena as the occupational structure of labour force, contents of courses in relation to the recruitment and promotion practices of employers, the migration of skilled labour between regions within a country and between different countries, distribution of personnel and income, the propensity to save out of current income and most general of all prospects of economic development. The economics of education has contact point with labour economics, public sector economics, welfare, development theory and growth. Education is only one type of investment in human-beings. It covers not only formal education, but out of this in the form of labour training adult education, extensions programmes. Etc. which cannot be left out of account in any discussion of the subject. This book is a significant contribution to the study of education. Printed Pages: 356. Seller Inventory # 31627

About this Item: Anmol Publications Pvt. Ltd., 1993. Hardcover. Condition: New. Out of many problems which the less developed countries face, two can be singled out as potentially the most serious source of tension and disruption in the international economy. The first is the massive foreign debts which they have contracted and the acute service problems which these cause. The other is the shortage of foreign funds on concessional terms for development purposes. Both are obviously related since the more debts they accumulate, the higher debt service payments and the less resources there are for development purposes. This is turn reduces the rate of growth and provides less domestic savings for investment and debt servicing purposes. The phenomenon of less developed country debt would have been through an importable international issue. Even the most acute observers of the global economy did not contemplate the emergence of the less developed countries as large-scale borrowers in international capital market. The immediate concern, especially within the framework of a especially within the framework of a stagflationary world economy, was whether the high indebtedness of less developed countries was dangerous to the solvency and stability of the lending banks and thereby the international financial system. This collection of articles presents a variety of views and perspectives on the topic of less developed country debt. Printed Pages: 472. Seller Inventory # 31621

About this Item: Anmol Publications Pvt. Ltd., 1993. Hardcover. Condition: New. International trade has played a significant role in financing the economic development programme of the developing countries. As these countries are mainly primary goods producing and exporting countries and heavily depend on their traditional exports to a number of developed countries; the markets for these exports are of great significance. Since these markets are often very unstable, heavy dependence on exports of one or two items carries with it a degree of risk and uncertainly. Any action in the countries purchasing the exports of developing world in bulk might further aggravate such risks. It is, therefore, the actions of those countries with when their trade relations are more important, which are determinants of impact on their trade particularly export-its quantum as well as exports. This book puts in proper perspective the role, which export promotion measures/ system should play to ensure continuing expansion and diversification of India`s exports in the context of the highly competitive, complex and fact changing international marketing environment. About this Item: Anmol Publications Pvt. Ltd., 1998. Hardcover. Condition: New. Economic thought is a critical account of the development and activities. It is a study of the heritage left by writers on economic subjects. During the course of first five decades of the present century, several new changes took place in regard to the science as well as in the field of economic analysis. The fundamental changes in economics have come to be recognized as a pure science. As distinguished from political economy, a new subject, viz., scientific or analytic economics has been developed, in which new facts have been collected for explaining the phenomena of economic life. A new analytical apparatus known as economic dynamics has been developed and micro-economic analysis has been replaced with micro-economic analysis. Present book deals with the views of some of the most important economists of present century, especially those who have influenced or are still influencing the direction of economic thought and policy. Economics of different origins have been included in this book. The selection has been made arbitrary since in this brief compass. Printed Pages: 420. Seller Inventory # 31617

About this Item: Anmol Publications Pvt. Ltd., 1993. Hardcover. Condition: New. The study of fiscal-monetary links in closed and open economics is a new and exciting area of research in Public Finance. It is generally assumed that the market rate of interest is one of the independent variable that determine the quantity of money that individuals with to hold; most quantitative as well as theoretical papers have utilised that rate. But what is interest income is taxed. Should not one then adjust the market rate for the effect of tax? After all the opportunity cost of holding money in that case is the net of tax interest rate. What this means is that tax policy may have an immediate effect on the demand for money. What if the rate of inflation raises the nominal interest rate and thus, the tax payment on interest income, to such an extent that the net-of-tax interest rate falls below the expected rate of inflation? Would not one then witness a substitution between money and real assets or goods? The impact of government spendings, debt. and taxes is one of the most important public finance issues. There has been revolution recently in the way economists approach such questions and this volume is in the forefront of this new wave. It assimilates the leading work being done in this field while advancing it and offers a united framework that is unique in its ability to analyse the repercussions of changes in fiscal policies. The long-run impact of deficit has been a highly controversial issue in both the public and the professional debate. While this book provide a favour of the variety of conceptual and empirical approaches that have been used to analysed deficits. It is hoped that the papers presented in this book will be seen as a useful contribution. Printed Pages: 384. Seller Inventory # 31626

About this Item: Anmol Publications Pvt. Ltd., 1998. Hardcover. Condition: New. The process of recession in developed market economies has once again made unemployment of the labour force an object of primary concern. Governments have been called upon to reaffirm their commitment to full employment as one of the supreme policy goals. In some cases growing segments of the public, impatient with the slow resorption of unemployment in the economic recovery, have demanded that the government assume in full its responsibility for achieving full employment by becoming an employer of last resort. At the same time, however, theoretical and empirical research by economists on the labour market adjustment exemplified in the papers selected for the volume, has increasingly cast doubt on the ability of economic policy to affect permanently the rate of employment. Equal employment policy for women stands at an historic juncture in the developed countries. Equal pay and equal employment opportunity policies thus are high priorities on the political agenda in the developed economy. While the development of policies in advanced countries is at varying stages, the issue has moved from a concern whether to expand the employment opportunities of women to a preoccupation with how best to accomplish this change. As a consequence of this weightened interest in policy implementation policy-makers and other concerned with women workers are grapping with the difficulties and dilemmas that arise in the selection of specific goals and concrete means for achieving women`s labour market quality. About this Item: Anmol Publications Pvt. Ltd., 1997. Hardcover. Condition: New. Foreign Trade in the economy of India has a strategic place in the process of economic development. It is pointed that India started with emphasis on import substitution and in latter years combined import substitution with export promotion. Relatively greater emphasis has been given to the use of physical interventionist policies. The institutional framework which has grown with the physical interventionist approach is now a major constraint on the process of adopting fiscal measures in place of physical measures. This book reviews established policy pattern towards foreign trade and attempts to evaluate the complexities of India`s Foreign Trade. Printed Pages: 452. Seller Inventory # 31620

About this Item: Anmol Publications Pvt. Ltd., 1993. Hardcover. Condition: New. The countryside in India continues to the plagued with poverty and unemployment as well as underdevelopment. Similar is the situation in rural areas of practically all the developing countries. For nearly four and half decades various strategies have been formulated and programmes introduced to raise the living standards and quality of life in the rural areas. Other developing countries have also tried such experiments. But these twin problems do not seem to have loosened their stranglehold anywhere appreciably in the entire developing world. Main reliance has been placed so far on agricultural development for the transformation of rural life and the promotion of rural economy. The agricultural sector no longer possesses the capacity to absorb any sizable portion of the emerging labour force. Further owing to rapid rise in population, the land-man ratios are worsening fast. Essentially, therefore, the alternative lies in the diversion of rural manpower to non-agricultural sectors and the diversification of the rural economy. Rural industries, services and enterprises constitute the non-farm sector. The appropriate strategy for the rural industries to follow now should be the expansion of rural industries, services etc. These should only diversify the rural economy, but also help in future development. Rural industries, services etc. will open out new opportunities for gainful employment, when there are no agricultural operations. This book constitutes as unique collection of papers on various issues of rural economics, a subject that has been aired a great deal in recent years in India. Printed Pages: 456. About this Item: Anmol Publications Pvt. Ltd., 1993. Hardcover. Condition: New. Rising land productivity is the only solid and enduring basis for rural economy to achieve a continuous increase in production. A rise in land productivity can take place in many ways. One such possibility lies in increasing multiple cropped areas either by introducing new crops or by expanding area under exiting ones. The underlying assumption is that every unit of the incremental cropped area gives some additional output although small, so that output per acre of not sown area rises even if it my or may not give in increase in output acre of gross cropped area. It is, therefore, in the fitness of things that the future thrust in Indian agriculture goes interalia, in the direction of increasing multiple cropping. In this connection, it is relevant to pose the question how are the prospective gains of rising cropping intensity going to be shared by various farm size group? In particular, what is the future of small farms in the matter of cropping intensity? For locating a meaningful answer to this question. We must look to the experience of the past and the interim changes that are taking place at present. This book presents a vivid and penetrating analysis of land management in rural economy in ending rural poverty and unemployment. Printed Pages: 368. Seller Inventory # 31619

India has basically been an agricultural country and it is likely to continue to be so far along time to come unless some miracle happens at some stage. In spite of this country has been unable to be assured of needed supplies of foodgrains and other agricultural products. The in-depth analysis carried out recently about the progress and prospects of Indian economy has shown what potentials exist. It is necessary to make everyone in the nation aware of these potentials as also the tasks to be performed to realize these potentials for the good of the country in particular and the world in general. The economic crisis through which the nation is passing involves an examination of many complex and delicate problems. The present volume differs from others in its approach and the perspective it offers. It gives a new kind of analysis usually neglected in the literature dealing with Indian economic problems. There are many problems such as the question of unemployment rising market prices, food scarcity and the need for a better standard of living which significantly influence the common man. Under democracy, he is intimately involved in policy decisions relating to these subjects. Such decisions, however, are not single to arrive at they require comprehensive study, serious deliberation, and well coordinated programmes for talking them. Decisions relating to planning strategy, market mechanism, private initiative, industrial licensing, and international economic transactions has profound impact on production and distribution of national wealth. The economic decisions relating to these subjects are also very much affected by political considerations. But, it assumes that the individuals who decide these matters should be aware of all the implications. Printed Pages: 378. Seller Inventory # 31641

About this Item: Anmol Publications Pvt. Ltd., 1993. Hardcover. Condition: New. The study of monetary policy in the context of a less developed economy is an estimation of the measure of contribution made to economic development of the country. It is a case study of monetary management in the developing economy of India. The study in fact departs from the traditional monetary policy and explains growth-oriented policy implications with an objective of achieving development with stability. Monetary policy in India has to be formulated and pursued in the context of a planned economy whose main objectives to accelerate the process of economic growth. The compulsion to expand expenditures, both plan and non-plan, necessarily leads to an expansionary fiscal policy and monetary policy has to play the role of a counter-vaillina force while facilitating at the same time the fulfilment of the basic objectives of planning. About this Item: Anmol Publications Pvt. Ltd., 1997. Hardcover. Condition: New. The exchange of goods and services is the means through which independent economic units enter into relation with one another and become part of a local or national economic community. As exchange passes beyond a country`s boundaries, it becomes parts of a broader regional, continental or world economy. Trade has undergone along revolution from primitive bar system to the modern combined with an intricate system of international credits, loans and investment. The economic prosperity of a country depends in a large measure on its foreign trade. Naturally, there is a keen tussle among the countries of the world to promote exports in order to earn valuable foreign exchange needed for their economic development. There is also an urge on the part of developing and primary producing countries to industrialized and self-sufficient in important and major items of their requirement, since they feel that they cannot depend entirely on agriculture to provide employment for their growing population and improve the lot of the people. As against this, there is a very strong tendency in the highly industrialized countries of the world to form groups on regional basis in order to create an area of trade within themselves free of all kinds of barriers. The book makes an attempt to bring such developments and other trends in international trade in a proper focus for promoting trade of south. Printed Pages: 480. Seller Inventory # 31639

About this Item: Anmol Publications Pvt. Ltd., 1993. Hardcover. Condition: New. Technology, with its ability to improve our lives has become increasingly important throughout the world. This is true for the developed economics as well as those nations which are just beginning to developed a technological base. There are many ways to transfer technology to developing countries. One way is through direct investment by a multinational corporation in a wholly owned or majority owned subsidiary. Another is through a joint venture where the multinational has a minority interest. Other ways include the use of licenses and patents, turn-key operations, management contacts, equipment suppliers, and consultative arrangements that may be done independently or in combination with some of the other modes of transfer. The essence of all these methods however, is that the technology moves from a private entity in the developed country to the recipient, public or private, in the developing country. While the developing countries may resent this dependence, the harsh truth is that developing countries do not need technology, and there exist few alternative sources outside the transnational corporations where they may obtain it. The innovation of new products and the transfer of technology between countries are desirable from a global perspective. The innovation of new products increase the range of consumer choice and transfer of technology increases the efficiency of world production; both innovation and technology transfer affect the distribution of income between the two countries. About this Item: Anmol Publications Pvt. Ltd., 1993. Hardcover. Condition: New. This volume goes to the heart of the continuing debate on the interaction between branches of social and natural sciences in an integrated framework. The elements of a new paradigm to consider economic processes in relation to physics and biology are starting to emerge more clearly, and in some cases, they have already been erected from solid foundations. Recently, new global problems generated by economic and population growth, environmental degradation, and rapidly changing technologies have placed renewed attention on the relation between economic and ecology. During last fifty years, a highly interdependent world system has consolidated and introduced qualitative changes in the human perception of our relation to the rest of nature. The energy situation inn the developing world is desperate. Because the developing countries are primarily dependent on fossil fuels, chiefly oil, for industrial growth, they have been hard hit by oil price increases. Further, in the rural area, where most of the population lives, there are limited supplies of increasingly expensive diesel fuel or kerosene. Noncommercial energy sources such as firewood, dung, and agricultural residues are generally used in rural areas, but under the pressure of growing populations the forests are disappearing. This is resulting in a critical shortage of firewood for cooking and heating, as well as in the destruction of the environment. In addition, when dung and agricultural residues are burned, valuable fertilizers are destroyed. Thus, the rural areas, the sources of food and fiber, face a particularly alarming situation. About this Item: Anmol Publications Pvt. Ltd., 1993. Hardcover. Condition: New. With the rapid progress of decolonisation the political order underwent a rapid transformation. One of the most historic and spectacular developments of global significance following upon the end of Second World War has been the phasing out of the colonial era over a short span of about three decade only. During the interwar years. Western Europe dominated the world. Sovereignty over scores of countries in Asia. Africa and South America resided in its seven metropolises. These centres of power influenced, indeed determined, the structure of political and economic institutions over nearly three-fourth of the globe. The trends in the international trading environment during the post decade or so have been influenced by increased perception on the part of the international community to the need for formation of trade and development processes of the Third World. This perception is also reflected in adopting of pacific policy measures. In trade, addition of part four of General Agreement on Trade and Tariffs. Which permitted special dispensation in favour of developing countries and adoption of Generalised System of Preferences, is a significant example of progressive moves taken by developed countries. About this Item: Anmol Publications Pvt. Ltd., 1998. Hardcover. Condition: New. Over the past few years counter trade has become an important feature of contemporary international exchange, its upsurge has coincided with a generalised stringency of foreign exchange and a balance of payment crises in most countries. A very strong presumption can therefore be advanced that its upsurge is a response to the crises of the trading and financial system which has been in evidence over the last few years. The present volume provides a clear overview of the role of counter trade in International Economics. Printed Pages: 400. Seller Inventory # 31629
