About this Item: Pook Press, United States, 2016. Hardback. Condition: New. A Duncan Carse (illustrator). Language: English. Brand new Book. Lucy M. Scott's collection of short stories, 'Dewdrops from Fairyland' was originally published in 1912. The stories were written by the author when she was just nine years old, produced sporadically and originally entitled 'Entirely Unaided'. This beautifully illustrated collection would make for ideal bedtime reading, and is highly recommended for those with a love of fairies and fairy tales. Contents include: 'Silver Wings' Visit to Earth', 'Tiger-Lily Sprite', 'The Last Bee of Summer', 'The Immortal Baby', 'The Witch and the Goblin', 'When the Sun and Moon Met', 'The First Rose Beetle', 'A Blackberry Tale', and 'Mrs. Nightingale's Evening Party'. These tales are further enhanced by the wonderful watercolour illustrations of A. Duncan Carse - a lesser known though immensely accomplished artist and Golden Age illustrator. Although Carse provided the illustrations for Lucy M. Scott's Dewdrops from Fairyland, it was his contributions to Hans Christian Andersen's Fairy Tales that arguably solidified his reputation as an accomplished illustrator of children's books. Pook Press celebrates the great 'Golden Age of Illustration' in children's classics and fairy tales - a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration. We publish rare and vintage Golden Age illustrated books, in high-quality colour editions, so that the masterful artwork and story-telling can continue to delight both young and old. About this Item: Royal Geographical Society, London, 1959. First Edition. 18 pages, including sketch maps. Plus black and white plates. Original condition with blue wrappers, titles to front, and containing all the ads. This is a complete issue, seldom found in such good and original condition. A party comprising deputy leader Kevin Walton, surveyors Gordon Smillie and John Heaney, geologist Alec Trendall, mountaineer Walter Roots and leader, Dr Brian Roberts set off for South Georgia - best remembered as journey's end for great polar explorer, Ernest Shackleton - arriving on November 1st, 1951 aboard the tanker/transport, Southern Opal. A simple program of topographical survey was planned in the region of the south-west coast from Cape Disappointment to King Haakon Bay and the interior west of the Allardyce Range, together with geological exploration. The 1953-54 season was blighted illness and the party made slow progress westwards, their intent to survey the Brunonia Glacier and down the Ryan Glacier to Tawny Gap. Poor weather conditions and subsequent time constraints resulted in little success, however. The third of the South Georgia Surveys (1955-56) was to be the most ambitious. A larger expedition party intended to fill in the four major gaps on the existing map of the island, a feat nearly accomplished and completed in a Survey Report II in the 1956-57 season. A humourous and detailed narrative accompanied by map and photos. Seller Inventory # 026483

About this Item: Pook Press, United States, 2016. Hardback. Condition: New. A Duncan Carse (illustrator). Language: English. Brand new Book. A collection of nineteen of Hans Christian Andersen's most famous short stories, first published in 1912. Stories include: 'The Little Mermaid', 'The Emperor's New Clothes', 'Little Thumb', and 'The Snow Queen', 'The Galoshes of Fortune', 'The Red Shoes', 'The Wild Swans' and others. Hans Christian Andersen (1805 - 1875) was a Danish poet and author celebrated for his children's stories but perhaps best known for his fables and fairy tales - meant for both adults and children. They were frequently written in a colloquial style, using idioms and spoke language in a manner previously unseen in Danish literature. Though simple at first glance, Hans Andersen Fairy Tales often convey sophisticated moral teachings, in equal measure heart-breaking and heart-warming. These tales are further enhanced by the wonderful watercolour illustrations of A. Duncan Carse - a lesser known though immensely accomplished artist and Golden Age illustrator. Andreas Duncan Carse (1876 - 1938) provided the illustrations for Lucy M. Scott's Dewdrops from Fairyland in 1912 but it was Carse's contributions to Hans Christian Andersen's Fairy Tales that arguably solidified his reputation as an accomplished illustrator of children's books.
