About this Item: DOUBLEDAY & COMPANY, GARDEN CITY, NEW YORK, 1947. HARD BACK GREY. Condition: GOOD. FIRST ED. This is one Liebling connection to the Sterns. His son, Capt. David Stern III, created Francis the Talking Mule. Your inscription probably was to the son, otherwise the inscription would have read "To J. David Stern . . ." . signed and inscribed by author on front end paper, "For David Stern, who knows the meaning of words, A.J. Liebling." Julius David Stern (April 1, 1886 October 10, 1971) (ofter referred to as J. David Stern) was an American newspaper publisher, best known as the liberal Democrat publisher of The Philadelphia Record from 1928 to 1947, as well as other newspapers including the New York Post from 1933 to 1939. David Stern III. He is the son of prominent Philadelphia publisher J. David Stern. In 1949, he purchased the New Orleans Item-Tribune for $2 million. He ran the paper until its 1958 merger.[1] He is the author of the Francis the Talking Mule books that later became a film series. In 1958, the Item-Tribune merged with the Daily States (founded in 1880) to form the New Orleans Daily States-Item. In 1962, publisher and businessman Samuel I. Newhouse bought the morning Times-Picayune as well as the afternoon States-Item, which continued to be published separately until they were merged and combined in 1980.[2] age toned, some words highlighted, foot of spine bumped, rubbed extremities, bumped corners, else good binding. About this Item: Alfred A. Knopf, New York, 1952. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First edition. Drawings by Steinberg. A few pages roughly opened, including one that removes some text, thus very good in near fine, very slightly spine-sunned dustwrapper. Three long essays on Chicago that first appeared in the New Yorker, Inscribed by Liebling to his editor there: "To Bill Shawn - Joe Liebling." A relatively innocuous inscription masking an important relationship, Shawn had worked at the New Yorker since 1933, and became only the second editor-in-chief at the beginning of 1952 after the death of founder Harold Ross.
