Item Description: London, T. Bensley for J. Edwards, Cadell and Davies, and J. White, 1797. 2 volumes. Folio (405 x 315mm). pp. (8), xvi, (1), 1-98; pp. (4), 99-208, (6, index), with 104 fine handcoloured engraved plates. Contemporary maroon straight-grained morocco, richly gilt decorated sides, richly gilt spines with gilt lettering, gilt turn-ins, gilt edges. First edition, later issue, of this beautifully illustrated treatise on the Lepidoptera and associated flora of the American South. It is the first work devoted to American lepidoptera. The text is in English as well as in French. John Abbot, born in London in 1751, became a professional natural history collector and illustrator, supplying specimens and paintings to many of the famous cabinets in Great Britain. He emigrated to Virginia in 1773, and later settled in Georgia, where he took part in the Revolution. Although he executed several thousand watercolour drawings of the American flora and fauna, this is his only published work. It was prepared by James Smith, president of the Linnaean Society, who verified the species and added his own notes. In his preface he remarks how this is the first treatise on the entomology of North America. In preparing Abbot's notes and checking identifications, he had recourse to several collections containing specimens and illustrations supplied by Abbot, including that of Sir Joseph Banks. The plates are some of the finest ever made of butterflies and moths, and are notable for including all the stages of metamorphosis, along with the food plants of the species. They were engraved by J. Harris from Abbot's original drawings. Most copies of this work are of the early 19th century issue, with watermarks as late as 1822. Our copy has some watermarks dated 1794, 1820 and 1822. A splendidly bound copy in mint condition with the book plate of Albert Edgar Lownes, (1899-1979), famous American book collector.Dunthorne 287; Great flower books 76; Nissen ZBI, 2. Item Description: San Francisco, 1954. First Edition. A UNIQUE OFFERING THE TWELFTH WORLD SCIENCE FICTION CONVENTION PAPERS. Held in San Francisco in the summer of 1954 with G.O.H. John Campbell, Jr., this was one of the great early gatherings. Included in this massive archive is everything that one might want to know about running a convention: Hotel rates for rooms, banquets, buffet menus, rentals, carpenters, electricians, etc. There are letters from attendees and those who wished to attend but could not; paid invoices from photo shops, printers, etc.; canceled checks (along with some unused ones as well) and check stubs; Radio scripts from local stations and press clippings and pictures from local papers; letters from major Motion Picture Studios answering requests about film availability; SIGNED letters from advertizers (including all the small presses); the entire convention mailing list; black & white photos picturing singularly or in group Ackerman, Anderson, Boucher, Bloch, Campbell, Clifton, Dick, Ellison, Evans, Gold, Mayne, Ley, Moskowitz, Nourse, E.E. Smith, Williamson, Van Vogt, Vampira, et.al. But of course the major importance of this archive has yet to be mentioned. And that's simply the great abundance of SIGNED letters, post-cards and notes from authors and artists. To wit: Anderson, Asimov (3), Blaisdell, Blish, Bond, Bonestell (4), Boucher (3), Bradbury (4), Bretnor, F. Brown, Howard Browne, Budrys, Campbell (5), Clement, Clifton (2), Collier, Conklin, DeCamp, DeFord, Dick, Dickson, Dollens (8), Emshwiller (2), Eshbach (2), Evans, Farmer, Freas (3), Greenberg (2), Gunn, Heinlein, Hunter (5), Kuttner, Ley (5), Moskowitz, Neville, Nolan (3), Nourse, Obler, Orban (3), Palmer, Pratt, Simak, E.E. Smith (2), Tucker, Williamson (3), Wylie, et.al. Finally, also included is a set of audio tapes which were taken at this convention. Now for the first time (depending on your age I guess) you can not only be privy to what went on at this convention, but also hear the actual voices of Anthony Boucher, John W. Campbell, E.E. "DOC"Smith and others too numerous to mention. A unique opportunity to snatch a bit of vintage post-war Science Fiction history. (The tapes, while definitely included in this grouping, may not be immediately available.). Bookseller Inventory # 10332

Andrew Michaux, and Containing All the Forest Trees Discovered in the Rocky Mountains, the Territory of Oregon, Down to the Shores of the Pacific, and into the Confines of California, as Wells as in Various Parts of the United States." Michaux's original three volumes were a result of ten years of research, illustrated with 156 colored copperplate engravings by the Route brothers, Pierre Joseph and Henri Joseph, and Pancrace Bessa, and were generally considered the authoritative text in the field upon its publication. Item Description: Sampson Low, Marston, Searle, & Rivington., London., 1881. 4to. (284 x 222 mm). pp. (i), 100 (including 21 leaves with plates). Title, list of plates and twenty-one monochrome Woodburytype photographs, each mounted on card within a red border with title in red. Original publisher's red cloth, with gilt title and elaborate decoration in blind and gilt figures from 'Covent Garden Flower Women' and 'the London Boardmen', printed floral endpapers. Street Incidents, John Thomson's photographic depictions of London's street life. Published as a shortened version of Thomson's earlier Street Life in London, Street Incidents contains 16 fewer plates, though apart from the altered title the binding is the same. It is unknown whether the plates were reprinted due to the popularity of the work or whether the present volume was reissued with fewer plates to ensure sale of the publisher's stock. Thomson's photographs in 'Street Life in London' and the commentary upon the images by Thomson and Adolphe Smith, depict a London in which life is a harsh and continuous struggle. The characters on view here are familiar to us more from Dickens' novels or from an idea of the Whitechapel of Jack the Ripper than from any nostalgic image of a strait-laced or patrician Victorianism. Each image is accompanied by descriptive text. Thomson and Smith are sympathetic to the objects of their study and seem intent on cataloguing the variety of types to be found rather than attempting any Barnum-like freakshow. As Thomson himself writes: 'The precision and accuracy of photography enables us to present true types of the London poor and shield us from the accusation of either underrating or exaggerating individual peculiarities of appearance'. 'Street Life in London . constitutes the first photographic social documentation of any kind.' (Gernsheim - The History of Photography pg. 447). ' . one of the most significant and far-reaching photobooks in the medium's history.' (The Photobook I, 48). [Parr / Badger I, 48; see Gernsheim pg. 447]. Bookseller Inventory # 43902

Item Description: B.M. Smith and A. J. Hill, St. Paul, Minnesota, 1863. Pocket map, lithographed by Louis Buechner, St. Paul. Inset map titled "Outline Map of Dakota Territory." Folds into publisher's green cloth covers, covers decoratively blocked in blind, titled in gilt on the upper cover, publisher's printed prospectus on the front pastedown. In fine condition. One of the earliest maps of Dakota Territory and a Sioux Uprising rarity. The map clearly shows all of the roads, railroads, forts, towns, rivers and Indian lands in the region, as well as the exploration routes of Nicollet and others in the new Dakota Territory. The prospectus mounted on the inside cover reveals the intention of the compiler: "This map is issued in the hope that it may be found a valuable travelling companion for immigrants, U.S. deputy surveyors, military officers, and others. It is compiled from the U.S. Land and other official surveys, and where those have not yet extended, from information derivable from the reports and maps of Mons. Nicollet, Lieut Warren, and other explorers." "This [second] edition gives several new counties along the eastern boundary of the Territory, both in the inset and on the main map, and there are various new counties in the southern part of the Territory. The inset in this issue shows the creation of Idaho Territory to the west of Dakota" (Streeter). Perhaps more importantly, however, this edition of the map is important for the additions relating to the Sioux War. These include the locations of the Battles of Birch Coulee and Wood Lake (each marked with small red x's), as well as the location of Camp Release (dated on the map October 1862) and the spot near Kampeska Lake where Colonel William R. Marshall of the 7th Minnesota captured a force of Sioux warriors. We find no copy of this map on the market since the Thomas W. Streeter copy. Item Description: Hexagono, La Plata, Argentina, 1971. Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: very good. A complete set of Hexagono’71 edited by Edgardo Antonio Vigo between 1971 and 1975 missing only 4 of the 70 contributions (replaced by colour xeroxes of the items). A seminal artist’s periodical featured in the MoMA library exhibition The Unmaker of Objects: Edgardo Antonio Vigo’s Marginal Media, 2014. Hexagono 71 was distributed as an envelope containing loose-leaf illustrations, woodcuts, drawings, silkscreen posters, visual poems, essays, photo montage, collage, tickets with stamps, photocopy works and mail art elements, by Argentinian and international contributors. An important mail art periodical of the South American avant-garde that mixed experimental art and literature with a political sensibility: indeed, Hexagono 71 was inaugurated during the dictatorship of 1966–73 and many of the works engage with the violence of the military regime. The issues were systematized using a lettering system, as opposed to numbers, and its covers often printed a logo design in varying colours, with cut-out labels attached with thread and circular perforations.
