About this Item: Frankfurt, M. : Lang, 2013. Originalbroschur. Condition: Wie neu. 181 S., Bl. 62 - 78. Ein gutes und sauberes Exemplar. - The medical section of the Kitab al-Na?i?atayn or Book of the Two Pieces of Advice by the medieval author c Abd al-Latif ibn Yusuf al-Baghdadi (1162-1231) challenges the idea that Arabic-Islamic medicine declined after the twelfth century A.D. Moreover, it offers some interesting insights into the social history of medicine. c Abd al-Latif composed his work as a diatribe directed against false knowledge, and employed the framework of Greek medical epistemology to criticize the rationalist physicians of his day and age. He argued that female and itinerant practitioners, relying on experience, were superior to some rationalists, and decried the wickedness and incompetence of certain medical practitioners of his time. In addition, he lambasted contemporaneous medical education because it put too much faith in a restricted number of textbooks such as the Canon of Medicine by the celebrated physician Ibn Sina (Avicenna), or chiefly relied on imperfect abridgments. The medical section of the Book of the Two Pieces of Advice is translated here for the first time in a modern language. It is preceded by a lengthy introduction that highlights c Abd al-Latifs complicated relation to both medicine and alchemy. The present study also contains the first full bibliography on c Abd al-Latif ibn Yusuf al-Baghdadi and his milieu. ISBN 9783631642856 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 320. About this Item: Allen & Unwin, London, 1965. Cloth. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. This volume contains a facsimile edition of the autograph Arabic manuscript of 'Abd al-Latif al-Baghdâdi's eye-witness description of Egypt written in 1204 A.D. The text given here is the author's own abridgement of his longer and more detailed work which has been lost. The Arabic original is accompanied throughout by an English translation on the opposite page. The work falls into two parts: the first is a general description of Egypt, its fauna and flora, the Egyptians themselves and the food they eat and above all the remains of the civilization of Ancient Egypt which the author found especially fascinating. The second part is about the Nile and about the terrible famine which took place at the turn of the century in the years 1200-1201 A.D. because the river did not rise high enough. In the famine it was not long before uninhibited cannibalism, starting in the Cairo underworld, became prevalent in a large section of the community. Not only were children and also adults continually being kidnapped and eaten but even the cemeteries were robbed. The Governor of Cairo decreed that anyone found eating human flesh should be burnt alive, but this appeared to make no difference, and the bodies of those who suffered this punishment were often eaten before they could be buried. This part of the book is perhaps not without its significance for the modern Western world, and in particular for England, for we live perpetually on the brink of famine, overcrowded to an extent without parallel in history and utterly dependent for our food upon a fantastically complex organisation. If anything ever went seriously wrong with this-and sooner or later is it not bound to happen?-nothing could save us from famine; and we may well ask ourselves whether or not a few weeks of extreme hunger would produce cannibalism and with it, here as in Cairo, an almost total moral collapse in other respects. As regards this last point few will be likely to maintain that the underworld of London in 1967 is in any respect better, to say the least, than the underworld of Cairo in 1200; and if anyone doubts whether any Englishman is a potential cannibal, let him remember that 'Abd al-Latif al-Baghdàdi himself could scarcely believe his own eyes and ears. The translators have been, one feels, unnecessarily free in one or two places. Also it is little short of a mystery why, in transcribing Arabic words into Latin letters, they have so often totally ignored the indications given by the author himself, who inserted the vowel marks wherever he felt that a reader might hesitate. His etymological paragraph on the derivation of the word "Nile" is unnecessarily marred in the English, and among the other examples I may mention, at the risk of pedantry, the names Dinouri in mistake for Dinawari, Maizz for Muizz, and Sha'ari for Shi`ra (Sirius). But these are small points. The translation on the whole is good and readable and together with the fine Arabic manuscript in facsimile (the author, though not a professional calligrapher, had a good hand of archaic Naskhi) it serves to make this handsome volume an asset to libraries of far more general scope than those few which are attached to schools of Oriental studies. About this Item: J. Cooke, Hanwell & Parker, Oxford, 1800. Contemporary Full Calf. Condition: Good. [9], xxxii 321 pp. + [48], Arabic & Latin text edited & translated into Latin by J. White, subscribers list at front, contemporary mottled calf gilt, slightly rubbed & scuffed, hinges weak. First Latin translation of al-Baghdadi’s Kitab al-Ifada Wa al-I’tibar fi al-Umur Wa al-Hawadith al-Mu’ayana bi Ard Misr. Abd al-Latif al-Baghdadi (1162- 1231), also known as Ibn al-Labbad, was a versatile scholar and scientist, and his numerous writings covered almost the whole domain of the knowledge of those days. Of those extant, the Kitab al-Ifad Wa al-I’tibar, a short description of Egypt, was widely known in Europe. The first text edition of this work was published in 1789 by White, who also subsequently published the present volume which also includes the first Latin translation . Joseph White ( 1745-1814) of Wadham College Oxford was Laudian professor of Arabic between 1775-1814. This edition is rich with Arab characters from the Imprimerie Imperiale in Paris, under the supervision of the famous orientalist J. J. Marcel ( 1776-1854), who was observing the printing of the Egyptian expedition of 1798. In this above position which he held up to 1815, he has done a good service by perfecting the Arab characters, and because of his long stay in Egypt he was expert on Islam in the East. This work is one of the earliest works on Egyptology which describes monuments as well as famine caused when Nile failed to flood, whilist the author was in Egypt, resulting in many corpses which Abd al-Latif examined (an early post morten account). The manuscript was discovered in 1665 by Edward Pococke, and the present work is the first complete edition with the Latin translation and additions by White. Abd al-Latif's graphic and detailed "Account of Egypt" in the original Arabic, here edited with a Latin translation (based on that of Edward Pococke the younger) by Joseph White (1745-1814). The Baghdad-born Abd al-Latif (1162-1231), a celebrated physician, historian, Egyptologist and traveller, was one of the most voluminous writers of the Near East in his time. One of the earliest works on Egyptology, this crucial work contains detailed descriptions of ancient Egyptian monuments, as well as a vivid description of a famine caused, during the author's residence in Egypt, by the Nile failing to overflow its banks. On this occasion Al-Latif had opportunity to observe and examine a large number of corpses - one of the earliest examples of a postmortem autopsy. - The Arabic manuscript was discovered in 1665 by Edward Pococke and preserved at the Bodleian Library. Pococke published the Arabic manuscript in the 1680s, and his son translated the work into Latin, though he was only able to publish less than half of his work. In 1800, Joseph White published it (with his own additions) in this present edition, which was then translated into French by De Sacy in 1810. - Bookplate of the City of York Public Library on front pastedown; small stamp of the Yorkshire Philosophical Society on title page.
