Book Club Edition issued the same year as the trade first. Isaac Bashevis Singer (1903-1991) was a Polish-born American writer who won the 1978 Nobel Prize in Literature. Writing primarily in Yiddish, he became renowned for blending folklore, moral parable, and human psychology in works such as The Slave and Gimpel the Fool. Murray Tinkelman (1933-2016) was an award-winning American illustrator celebrated for his cross-hatched pen-and-ink style and contributions to classic literature, magazines, and the New York Times Book Review. His finely detailed line art and subtle humor made him one of the defining illustrators of the mid-20th century.

In quite good navy cloth boards, gilt titles and walking fox with crane (from The Wolf And The Crane) to front. The boards are quite clean, a little loose from crack to hinge; edge-worn, with bumped corners and spine ends and sides of spine. Fairly clean pale yellow end papers. Tanned cut edges. The text block is firm and straight; lightly tanned on most page edges; a few marks and slight foxing to some pages, otherwise mostly clean and intact pages. Good plus condition. With numerous wood cut pictures by Ernest Griset, including frontispiece with a tanned tissue guard. No dedications etc. Publisher's list to rear. Overall good condition. Without jacket.

Upper edge gilt. A very attractive example of this scarce binding. Content: Very good content (bright, tight and clean, rare light foxing, toning and staining - as shown). No loose or damaged leaves.
