Original paper mechanical toy, measuring circa 12 inches tall, depicting a dancing "Sambo" character, printed in red, black and white, with moveable (double-jointed) legs that swing. Also present is the original printed envelope, illustrated in full color (reproducing the "Dancing Sambo" character in red, black and white), with detailed instructions on how to perform "The Amazing Dancing Sambo Illusion." About this Item: Taggard & Thompson,, Boston:, 1863. First edition. [AFRICAN-AMERICAN JUVENILE: SAMBO]. HAND SHADOW STORIES. [copyright in 1863 by John D. F. Brooks]. 16mo, pictorial wrappers, 32 pages, illustrated (with "hand shadow" illustrations). One of the stories is devoted to "Sambo the Contraband," an ex slave (with a hand shadow illustration of Sambo in profile); the other stories depict a (white) grandfather and various animals. Owner's early, neat rubberstamped name and address on title page. Fragile wrappers are quite soiled and creased, archivally mended along spine, few pages of text slightly soiled, else quite fresh and clean. Seller Inventory # 51110
