About this Item: John Lane The Bodley Head, 1921, 1921. 1st edition. Hardcover. Original decorative brown cloth, spine edges gently rubbed, the rough-cut pages clean bar a little edge-spotting, one early leaf with very slight edge-wear. Housed in a quarter morocco solander box with gilt spine lettering. Agatha Christie's first book also introduced her famous Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot. She wrote the novel as a result of a challenge to do so by her sister Madge. It appeared first in the US in October 1920, then in the UK in early 1921. The New York Times thought that, even though it was her first published work, 'she betrays the cunning of an old hand'. This copy is near fine, and very scarce. A Haycraft-Queen cornerstone. Accompanied by a small, folded laid-in sheet of paper signed by the author. Seller Inventory # PSHB7081

About this Item: John Lane, New York / Ryerson, New York / Toronto, 1920. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. First Canadian edition( using the JOHN LANE , NEW YORK SHEETS) ;PRECEDES THE UK FIRST! This first book by Agatha Christie and first appearance of Hercule Poirot, was published in 1920 by John Lane, New York and subsequently in the U.K. by John Lane, The Bodley Head in 1921.VERY GOOD without the rare jacket.THE CANADIAN FIRST EDITION obviously PRECEDES THE BRITISH FIRST EDITION and USED THE FIRST U.S. EDITION PLATES with a separately printed title page. The title page is integral and not tipped in. Ryerson Press probably printed very few copies of this book to secure Canadian copyright. The number of copies probably was fewer than 300 based on other printings by Ryerson, at that time, of established authors (e.g. Lucy Gayheart by Willa Cather, 1935).The spine bears the title The Mysterious Affair At Styles ; Christie and The Ryerson Press at the foot. At the base of the title page , underneath the title " The Mysterious Affair at Styles,( then a decorative printed device), A Detective Story by Agatha Christie " is printed : Toronto: The Ryerson Press - New York:John Lane Company-London: John Lane , The Bodley Head; MCMXX. The book has beige cloth covered boards, lettered and decorated in dark green. Decorations are different than the British edition. Cloth is rubbed and worn at extremities, slightly tanned at spine. ; front hinge starting; previous owners ink name and address ( Manitoba) to front paste down.Very good overall. LAID IN is a TYPED LETTER SIGNED (in pen) by the author to a fan in 1972 thanking him for his comments and his appreciation of re-reading of one of her books. Letter is a Royal Post Air Mail Letter. Christie has typed her " Winterbrook House" return address in the appropriate space and again at the top of her reply. Letter has been folded in the appropriate spots and is a little rough around the edges where it would have been opened by the recipient. Digital photos on request. A very RARE item. For the serious Christie completist! FREE INSURED SHIPPING by COURIER !Please contact the dealer if you have questions. Signed by Author(s). Seller Inventory # JD2956

About this Item: London: The Crime Club, 1953, 1953. Octavo. Original orange cloth, titles to spine in black. With the supplied dust jacket. Spine faded. Some spotting along top edge, corners faintly bumped. An excellent copy in the very lightly tanned dust jacket. First edition, first impression. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "Carlo from Agatha. May 1953". From the library of Charlotte ("Carlo") Fisher (1895–1976), Christie's secretary and early amanuensis with whom Christie wrote several major early titles. The method was described by Christie in her autobiography: "Charlotte and I sat down opposite each other, she with her notebook and pencil. I stared unhappily at the mantelpiece, and began uttering a few tentative sentences. They sounded dreadful. I could not say more than a word without hesitating and stopping. Nothing I said sounded natural. We persisted for an hour. Long afterwards Carlo told me that she herself had been dreading the moment when literary work should begin." By this process Christie - or "Missus" as she was known to Fisher - would find her authorial voice. During the difficult period of the breakdown of her first marriage, Fisher was Christie's only friend and confidante. They remained close throughout their lives. Seller Inventory # 75787
