This work is the biography of Father Junipero Serra, the lame Franciscan monk who forged the early links in the California mission chain. He devoted his life to his faith, making immeasurable contributions to our spiritual and cultural heritage. In 1749, Father Serra set out from Vera Cruz, on foot through the dense jungle, to Mexico City. It was the beginning of a spiritual adventure that lasted the rest of his life. At the age of fifty-five, almost crippled, he set out again with an expedition that traveled almost a thousand miles up the California peninsula to settle San Diego and Monterey.
