It is a historical romance that describes a young man pursuing the daughter of a miserly rich man during the 18th century. Illustrated by George Cruikshank with sixteen plates [counted,frontispiece to volume oneabsent, two others bound in different places]First edition. In three volumes complete. William Harrison Ainsworth (1805 - 1882) was an English historical novelist. Ainsworth briefly tried the publishing business, but soon gave it up and devoted himself to journalism and literature. His first success as a writer came with Rookwood in 1834, which features Dick Turpin as its leading character. A stream of thirty-nine novels followed, the last of which appeared in 1881. George Cruikshank (1792 - 1878) was a British caricaturist and book illustrator, praised as the modern Hogarth during his life. His book illustrations for his friend Charles Dickens, and many other authors, reached an international audience. Previous owner's ink inscriptions to titles. Condition: Rebacked in cloth bindings preserving original boards and backstrips. Externally, sound but with slight wear to extremities, rubbing and marks to boards. Internally, firmly bound but with one plateabsent. Bright but with occasional slight foxing and marks to pages, heaviest to plates with odd tidemarks. Overall: GOOD. Seller Inventory # 027712

William Harrison Ainsworth (1805-1882) produced many historical romances over his sixty-year career as a writer and is considered "the king of the historical potboiler." Ainsworth, whose narrative style is similar to that of Sir Walter Scott's, is chiefly remembered for popularizing the story of the highwayman Dick Turpin in Rookwood (1834) and the legend of Herne the Hunter in Windsor Castle (1843). The volume is lightly edge rubbed with bumped corners and some abraiding to the bottom edge of the front panel.
