It was becoming the preeminent American journal.THE PHOTOGRAPHIC TIMES was first published in 1871 as a supplement of THE PHILADELPHIA PHOTOGRAPHER. It absorbed THE AMERICAN PHOTOGRAPHER in 1879 to become THE PHOTOGRAPHIC TIMES AND AMERICAN PHOTOGRAPHER. In 1902, it merged with ANTHONY'S BULLETIN to form THE PHOTOGRAPHIC TIMES BULLETIN. Troubles with the natives arose, and most of the missionaries were forced to seek refuge in Sydney, Australia, while three on Tonga were killed. The mission on Tahiti was re-established in 1815. In addition to Tahiti, Tonga, and the Marquesas, the work contains valuable accounts of the Fiji Islands, Tongatapu, the Gambier Islands, and the discovery of a new group of islands, named the 'Duff Group', among the Santa Cruz Islands. On the outward voyage, the expedition visited Rio de Janeiro, an engraved view of which is included among the plates. The work is also of Australian interest because of a passage mentioning escaped Botany Bay convicts, and the fact that some of the missionaries who fled to Australia eventually settled there and founded families important in Australian history. Another later edition on laid paper with different pagination (4 p.l., c, 395, [1]blank, [12]). was published the same year. Cox II p. 307. Ferguson 301. Hill p. 184. About this Item: Benerman & Wilson, Philadelphia, 1901. First editions. 12mos., variable paginations, illustrations. 35 issues, the complete publication. The first 25 years are bound in 8 volumes of quarter morocco and cloth with gilt titles and rules on spine, there is wear at the hinges of the first 6 volumes due to dry leather, with one board partially detached; plus 10 years in original printed wrappers, and 2 volume are bound in cloth. Previous owner's neat bookplate, bookbinders sticker on pastedown of the first 8 volumes. Very good. Erroneously stated as commencing publication in 1864, this serial publication actually began in 1866. We are offering a rare and complete run, 1866-1901, of an annual publication that was part of the Wilson Company photographic concern. THE PHOTOGRAPHIC NEWS gives the following description of PHOTOGRAPHIC MOSAICS in April 1867: "The yearly collection in a handy volume of the most important articles which have appeared in the photographic journals is a great boon to photographers. Our esteemed friend, Mr. Wilson, Editor of THE PHILADELPHIA PHOTOGRAPHER, and his very able colleague, Mr. Carey Lea, have in their MOSAICS, just issued, not only issued a most judicious selection from various sources (always duly acknowledged), but they have presented the reader with some very valuable original articles besides. Altogether, this is one of the most valuable little volumes issued from the photographic press. Its circulation in America is, we understand, very large." Contributors include: H.P. Robinson, G.W. Wilson, Jabez Hughes, Edward L. Wilson, William Notman, John Towler, G. Wharton Simpson, Kilburn Brothers, H.H. Snelling. John Carbutt, Abraham Bogardus, George B. Ayers, E.M. Estabrook, H. Vogel, A. About this Item: P.C. Bradford, 38 West Newton St., 1891]., [Boston, MA:, 1891. 4to. [2], 221, [13] pp. written in manuscript in black ink, rubricated subject and place headings in red, manuscript page numbers all on ruled paper. With 49 sepia-tinted albumen photos tipped-in, sized 3.5 x 5 in. up to 4.5 x 7 in. (2 hand-coloured, some with captions & photographer's info in lower portion of negative), 15 tipped-in and laid-in lithographs, printed cards, clippings, engravings, and drawings. Contemporary limp pebbled calf, rounded corners, gilt lettering & date stamped on front cover, silk moire endpapers (minor chipping head & foot of spine, wear to fore-edges of covers), still a VG exemplar. This fascinating and unpublished manuscript travel diary, nicely illustrated with a collection of photographs was assembled during a Victorian excursion to Europe organized by the tourist agents Henry Gaze & Sons. Miss Bradford (fl. 1870-1905), writes of traveling with young Miss Harmon, and their many experiences in traveling by railroad, ocean liner, steam packet, carriage, and horseback throughout their trip. She writes of the crowded conditions trying to board the SS City of Rome in New York, the very tight Saloon Passenger accommodations, the sighting of schools of whales, a sea lion announcing its presence next to the ship, and even a shipboard death due to an Irishwoman gaining access to a bottle enroute to see her former home in Ireland. She describes the visits and viewing of Forth Bridge in Scotland, the Trossachs Hotel at Loch Katrine, Stirling Castle, Edinburgh Castle, the monument to Sir Walter Scott, Abbotsford, and Melrose Abbey. She often includes specific details, such as viewing the portfolio of relics of Napoleon Bonaparte collected by Sir Walter Scott, the swords of Rob Roy and the Earl of Montrose, the well built roads which were far superior to American roads of the same period, the beautiful stained glass, and more. She details hunting lace and textile samples in the Netherlands, viewing the paintings of Rubens, Rembrandt, Paul Potter, and others, the local folk costume and wooden shoes in Amsterdam, falls in love with the fine gardens and statuary in the Brussels Hotel de L'Empereur, the stunning beauty of the Cologne Cathedral, and nearly passes out while viewing the pretty graphic relics of the 11,000 Virgins in the Basilica of St. Ursula in Cologne. She describes how several different crops are grown by German farmers on small plots side-by-side, is delighted by finding them growing Indian corn near Heidelberg, and includes details of the castle and famous wine casks. In her scenic travels of Switzerland, she advises that the ladies being carried by Swiss Porters in sedan chairs to view Grindewald Glacier wait to tip them at the end, otherwise the trip takes forever because the men stop for a beer at every rest point. After Switzerland, the group travels to Paris, and she writes of the incredibly crowded services at the Paris Churches and Cathedrals, the custom of collecting tithes, or donations from every visiting tourist, and even a trip to view the Eiffel Tower. Of particular interest is her long description of the famed Aquarium at Palais Trocadero -- originally conceived and built in Paris in 1867, by direction of the architect Combaz, with surrounding gardens designed by Jean-Charles Alphand. This aquarium was a freshwater aquarium receiving waters pumped from the Seine, and featuring native fish stocks. The aquarium was built partly open, and partially underground with surroundings representing undersea grottoes similar to those from the tales of Jules Verne, arranged in 18 large tanks surrounding the galleries, by 1891 featured a large overhead viewing window which displayed the passing fish and waters, as well as additional tanks for saltwater specimens. She writes of the memorable thick yellow London fogs, as recounted by Doyle and Dickens, the politeness of Londoners queuing up waiting their turn for seats on coaches, pedestrians dodging carts and hansom cabs on the streets risking. ALLEGHENY CEMETERY:; HISTORICAL ACCOUNT OF INCIDENTS AND: McCandless, Wilson, et

About this Item: Bakewell & Marthens, Pittsburgh, 1873. Albee, S.V. (illustrator). First edition. 8vo., vii, 166 pp., with 16 full-page salted paper photographs by S.V. Albee. Two cracks to the cloth along the spine (still firm) and light flaking at the foredge of the front and rear boards. A very good copy. Allegheny Cemetery is one of the oldest and largest cemeteries in the United States, with its landscaping and monuments of great beauty. The photographs by S.V. Albee, which have a slightly greenish tint are likely to be uranium prints, developed in a solution of sulphate of iron, acid and diluted with water, which accounts for their faint appearance. These photographs highlight the architectural qualities of the monuments. The Carnegie Museum of Art provides the following biography for S. V. Albee: Born in Thomaston, Maine, Seth Voss Albee moved to Pittsburgh in 1867, where, by 1871, he was advertising his skills as an outdoor and view photographer. In 1876 a committee appointed by the Central Board of Education commissioned him to photograph all principal school district buildings in Pittsburgh. The following year Albee captured images of what came to be known as the Railroad Strike of 1877, which he published as a series of forty-two stereograph cards consisting of egg albumen prints from collodion negatives. These remarkable images were photographed during battles between the railroad strikers and the state militia and occasionally included his own photographic wagon in the foreground. The aftermath of battle is also shown in many views, from burned passenger cars in the Union Depot to mangled pieces of machinery littered throughout the rail yards. Other images depict the curiosity seekers who visited the devastation and became, for Albee, an integral part of his reporting. These stereographs of the Railroad Strike are regarded as the earliest surviving photographs of an American labor dispute. In 1879 Albee advertised as a "Practical Business Photographer in the Industries of Pennsylvania," setting forth his qualifications: "Here is clearly manifest to the connoisseur a natural gift conjoined with a scientific knowledge of chemical adaptation in the production of the desired light and shade, especially in his success in securing correct lines, and the skill and taste necessary to produce the strongest and most subtle life-like effect." Albee occupied several studios in downtown Pittsburgh, the last of which was located at 99 Fifth Avenue, where he produced various types of photographs, specializing in "Architectural and Mechanical Photography, also of Painting in Oil or Water Colors, Crayon Work, and to taking of enlarged views of landscapes.". About this Item: Fantagraphics, 2014. Hard Cover. Condition: New. Limited edition enormous 5 volume set plus a portfolio of art covers. Fantagraphics 2014. 1st Edition. Limited Edition. Slipcase. Part Colour illustrations. The complete 16 issues of Zap reproduced in their entirety plus an unpublished 17th issue, plus a whole volume on the history of Zap by the artists themselves, PLUS a volume of archival prints of all 17 zap covers. Robert Crumb, Rick Griffin, Paul Mavrides, Victor Moscoso, Spain Rodriguez, Gilbert Shelton, Robert Williams, and S. Clay Wilson. There scarcely was an underground comics world before Robert Crumb's classic solo first issue of Zap in 1968. By Zap #2, he had begun assembling a Seven Samurai of the best, the fiercest, and the most stylistically diversified cartoonists to come out of the countercultural kiln. All of them were extremists of one sort or another, from biker-gang member Rodriguez to Christian surfer Griffin, but somehow they produced a decades-long collaboration: a mind-blowing anthology of abstract hallucination, throat-slashing social satire, and shocking sexual excess, that made possible the ongoing wave of alternative cartoonists like Daniel Clowes, Chris Ware, and Charles Burns. The Complete Zap Comix collects every issue of Zap every cover and every story, and even the Zam mini comic jam among the Zap artists in a multi-volume, slipcased hardcover set. It also includes the 17th unpublished issue with work by Crumb, Moscoco, Wilson, Rodriguez, Shelton, Mavrides, and Williams. Plus, an introduction by founder R. Crumb and an oral history of Zap by Patrick Rosenkranz, and other exclusive bonus features and items TBA. Zap is the most historically and aesthetically important comics series ever published and this huge set (weighing in at over 22lbs or 10kg and measuring 9.75" x 13.25" x 7") certainly does it justice! 1100 pages. Size: 9" x 13" (229mm x 330mm). ISBN: 9781606997871. Seller Inventory # CZC
