Alan Davie (1920-2014) was a Scottish painter, printmaker, and jazz musician, celebrated for his vibrant, symbolic paintings influenced by Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, and world mythologies. Born in Grangemouth, Scotland, he studied at the Edinburgh College of Art and initially pursued jazz, which shaped his improvisational approach to art. His works often incorporate symbols and bold colors, inspired by Zen Buddhism, primitive art, and spirituality. Known for spontaneous, energetic compositions, Davie gained international recognition in the 1950s, exhibiting in major galleries like the Tate in London. He saw painting as a process of discovery, where meaning emerged naturally, setting him apart in post-war British art.
