Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Bound in dark olive green cloth with gold lettering on cover and spine. Binding good and tight. There are some scuffs on the boards. 19 pages preface plus 126 pages. Printed on unusually good quality paper, with uneven page edges, and final few pages uncut. Title page dated 1893. This copy has a library perforated punch on the title page (can't quite read the name) and almost entirely complete removal of library pocket in the rear - all the remains is ghostly edge of glue residue. No library markings anywhere else and nothing on the spine except a small square where the olive green might be a halftone lighter. First acted at the Independent Theatre in London. This is part of the Independent Theatre Series of Plays, edited by J.T. Green. This copy has early ownership name of Mildred Aldrich on the inside front cover, dated Boston 1893. Aldrich was working at the Boston Home Journal when this book was published; the next year she moved over to the Boston Herald to work as a drama critic. Later she moved to France and became friends with Gertrude Stein. All the other copies of this book available for sale mention that only 500 were printed and of those only 150 sold. which makes this copy part of that tiny fraction of copies that actually got out into the world. Shaw's first published play. Please email with questions or to request photos. If you see a photo beside this listing, please be aware that it's an ABE Stock Photo (whatever that is) and not a photo of this book.
