About this Item: Louis A. Godey, 1849. Hardcover--leather. Condition: Fair. First Edition. One volume--6 issues bound without covers and advertisements. Small quarto, 10" tall, 470 pages + plates + index, gilt spine titles, three-quarter black leather on brown cloth. A fair hard cover only overall with many problems: general exterior shelf wear, fore-corner tips worn through to boards, leather backstrip chipping and cracked, binding broken, signatures and some pages loose, first three plates loose, paper light to moderately yellowed, BUT scattered foxing and finger soiling throughout; the first ten editorial pages (including July title page) are missine, but all other editorial material appears to be present, (articles, stories, poetry, etc.) of the separate issues many pages have end tatters, five hand-colored fashion plates present as well as 21 other engraved plates (24 plate illustration noted in index)--many other regular plate printed plates present, including music. Lacking advertisements and individual covers. It was the practice of the time for most of the better literary magazines to issue such editions before melting down the original printers' plates. About this Item: Macmillan, London & Cambridge, 1865. Hardcover. Condition: Very good plus. 1st Edition. [328pp]: viii, 320 (last leaf ads); bound with duplex endleaves in gilt navy linen; 165 x 113 x 25 mm. Fifth thousand of this elusive anthology of religious poems for children (issued in the Golden Treasury Series); compiled by the Irish poet & eminent composer of hymns, Cecil Frances Humphreys (1818-95), Mrs William Alexander (Archbishop of Armagh), author of the popular Hymns for Little Children (1848). Note that the title-leaf & conjugate are on heavier plate stock, incorporating an engraving by R.Farran (C.H. Jeens, sculp[si]t) with attendant tissue guard; yet both figure in the pagination. Imprinted at foot of first plate leaf (verso): "Fifth Thousand" with "E.Clay, Son & Taylor" printer's slug above. Originally issued in London by Macmillan, & at Cambridge Mass, in a Welch, Bigelow printing under the imprint Sever and Francis (1865); the present joint edition may prove first thus. Inscribed ffe: "Presented to / Annie Jane Dresser / as a prize for / Improvement in Writing / by / Maxson Jones / Reeve / Lemonville Dec 18th 1874 / E. Jones / Teacher". Maxson Jones (1821-95) was elected Reeve of York County Ontario earlier the same year. "He was the second postman of the hamlet [of Bloomington] and was thought to have registered the community's name in 1869. Jones was a magistrate, storekeeper, assessor to the reeve of Whitchurch Township and he held municipal offices." His property, at the heart of the hamlet (adjacent to those of two Lemons & one George Brown), accommodated both the school & post office (cf, Ontario County Atlas, Whitchurch Township map). As his wife's name was Lydia, teacher E.Jones might possibly have been a relation. Bookseller's label on lower pastedown partly excised. One small light stain to upper cover, else a nice copy.
