About this Item: Cambridge: Printed for Presentation to the Members of The Roxburghe Club: First edition with Introduction by Stephen Gasalee, 1938. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Illustrated Edition. tall 8vo., viii, 24pp.,+ 92pp. Doctrinale printed in red and black collotype, top edges gilt, bound in original burgundy morocco backed boards spine titled in gilt. A fine clean bright copy of this famous work. Alexander de Villa Dei (Villedieu in Normandy), born in about 1170 in Villedieu-les-Poêles in Normandy, was a French author, teacher and poet, who wrote text books on Latin grammar and arithmetic, everything in verse. His greatest fame stems from his versified Latin grammar book, the Doctrinale Puerorum. The Doctrinale is a Latin grammar in something over 2600 hexameters, intended for clericuli novelli - ie. boys who have already mastered the rudiments of the language. It deals with accidence, syntax (in this part the rules are well and clearly expressed), prosody, accentuation, and "figures of speech". He died in 1240, or perhaps in 1250. He was a Franciscan and a Master of the University of Paris. The Roxburghe Club is the oldest and most distinguished society devoted to printing unpublished documents and reprinting rare printed texts, among them unknown or neglected works of English literature and history. The list of publications now runs to almost three hundred volumes that range from medieval manuscripts in facsimile and important works in Early and Middle English, to more modern texts, unpublished Jacobite documents, the correspondence of Garrick and the Countess Spencer, and Disraeli’s letters. The Club’s books are outstanding examples of fine printing – the reproductions are often by new and innovative techniques. The combination of important texts with distinguished typography has, from the beginning, commended Roxburghe books to libraries and connoisseurs alike. His Doctrinale puerorum, a versified grammar, soon became a classic. It was composed around 1200, and was all written in leonine hexameters. Even after several centuries, with the advent of printing, it appeared in countless editions in Italy, Germany and France. It was based on the older works of Donatus and Priscian. Seller Inventory # 3496

About this Item: Borm, Inc. Guelf. 92; CA 119; GW 1144; IILC 172 (2 copies, including the present copy); Kok, Houtsneden II, pp. 548-551; Reichling, Doctrinale 88.I. Synthen taught in the domus pauperum during Erasmus's school years in Deventer and probably knew him well. This commentary, mostly the work of Synthen, enjoyed a certain authority in educational circles and was reprinted at least 10 times before 1500 in Deventer alone. The text together with the commentary was first published by Richart Pafraet in 1477-1479.The present copy, recorded in the literature as Lansberg-Velen-Gemenbibl., Balve, Germany, lacks the first four leaves of the first quire (fols. a1-4; the inner lower corner of a4 is still present), including the title-page with woodcut and the prologue. Otherwise in good condition, with some contemporary scholarly annotations in ink. Some pages soiled, margins of first leaves restored. Seller Inventory # A77GJEHCTL0E
