About this Item: Éditions Chandeigne, Paris, 2015. Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. 1st Edition. English text; Hardcover (with dustjacket); 25.7 x 25 cm; 1.171 Kg; 175 pages with colour illustrations; Between 1543 - when Europeans arrived in Japan - and the 1640s when the country was closed to foreigners, the Japanese had regular contacts with the nanban-jin (Barbarians from the South). These merchants and missionaries, mainly from Portugal, were the source of a theme in Japonese art in the XVIth and XVIIth centuries. The paintings that decorated the nanban byobu (folding screens) depicted an extraordinary confrontation of civilizations ans its beauty is captivating. Through paintings primarily done buy the Kano school, the history of Portuguese arrival in Japan unfolds before our eyes. Sometimes critical, sometimes joyful and festival, the byobu reveal the beginning of Asia's Westernization. Nanban Folding Screen Masterpieces presents thirteen of these byobu accompanied by text about the fascinating history of the commercial, religious, and cultural encounters between Europe and Japan in this era. This book brings together folding screens from the Nanban Bunkakan Museum of Osaka, the Municipal Museum of Kobe and Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga de Lisboa - where the most important collections of nanban art are found - as well as the Victoria & Albert Museum of London, the Rijksmuseum of Amsterdam, Musée Guimet of Paris, Museu Soares dos Reis in Porto, the Museum of History and Culture of Nagazaki, and the Idemitsu Museum of Tokyo, as well as a folding screen from a private American collection. A specialist in Namban art, Alexandra Curvelo is a professor in the Department of Art History at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa. Her research focuses on the Christian missions in Japan in the early modern period. Seller Inventory # 133B

About this Item: Éditions Chandeigne, Paris, 2015. Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. 1st Edition. About this Item: Aschendorff Verlag Nov 2011, 2011. Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. About this Item: Chandeigne. Couverture rigide. Condition: Comme neuf. Edition originale. Paris 2015. 1 Volume/1. English and Portuguese text; Paperback; 24.5 x 28 cm; 1,4 Kg; 223 pages with colour illustrations thoughout; Used with signs of shelf wear. Interior as new.; Catalogue from the exhibition held at Fundacao do Oriente, Lisboa, 2010, 150 years after the signature by Portugal and Japan of the Treaty of Peace, Friendship and Trade.; "We are in the presence of a two-directional current of influences which is aptly illustrated by the comissions made as a result of the Portuguese presence in Japan from the second half of the 16th century until about 1640. There is a surprising projection of Japan's view of 16th and 17th century Europe, combining with the way that the cultures of Japan and the West asserted themselves in the face of the transformations engendered through knowledge of a new world. Through the objects shown in this exhibition - furniture, textiles, firearms and painting - we can enjoy the talent and the imagination of the Japanese artists and craftsmen, as a rare manifestation of art that arouses our responsiveness. The concentration of items of such excellent quality in this exhibition was only possible due to the collaboration between public entities and private collectors." excerpt from the foreword by Carlos Augusto Pulido Valente Monjardino, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Fundacao Oriente, 2010. About this Item: Jorge Welsh, London, 2009. First edition. Quarto. Sofcover. New. 188 Pages, 122 colour illustrations. The Age of Discovery brought Europeans to the shores of Africa, Asia and the Americas. This catalogue traces this great epoch of early contact and trade relations and illustrates how European, particularly Portuguese, culture and art influenced the world from the 15th century onwards. The introduction presents an historical account of the Portuguese presence in Asia. It includes a brief discussion on the complex commercial network that existed in the region, as well as in Africa, before the arrival of the Portuguese. It also gives insight into the unique empire established by the Portuguese, which was based on trade rather than territory. The catalogue examines a selection of seventeen works of art, many of them extraordinary in their rarity, exoticism and aesthetic beauty, which were made in Africa, India, China and Japan from the 16th to 18th centuries. These works of art, made by local craftsmen in various materials and decorative techniques, visually embody the reciprocal influences that arose from the contacts among these diverse and distant civilizations. They include a brass plaque from the Kingdom of Benin; a tortoiseshell casket and two black mastic and mother-of-pearl overlaid objects from Gujarat; a group of rare Chinese export porcelains and a six-fold lacquer screen from China; and three namban objects from Japan. Edgworn.; Offering a new perspective on global trade relations during the Age of Exploration, Portugal, Jesuits, and Japan explores the relationships between Portuguese merchants, Jesuits, and the Japanese during the nanban period (1543-1614). Created to accompany an exhibit of the same name at the McMullen Museum of Art, this catalogue is richly illustrated with full-page images of Japanese art and artifacts of the period, from and porcelain objects to furniture and weaponry. Victoria Weston has assembled a collection of nine essays by internationally renowned scholars from a variety of fields, which when taken as a whole create a comprehensive study of international relations during the period on a political, cultural, and spiritual level. The texts reflect upon a broad range of topics, from commercial contacts between shoguns and Iberian governments to close readings of the cultural implications of images depicted in nanban art. This volume explores the interactions between these three discrete groups through historical research, and the technological, political, and theological influence the West had upon the East and vice versa. About this Item: Arquivo Nacional da Torre do Tombo. Couverture rigide. Condition: Comme neuf. Edition originale.
