4°, contemporary mottled calf (poor-quality leather, worn), spine gilt with raised bands in five compartments, gilt-lettered green label. Small typographical ornament on title page. Typographical headpiece on p. 1. Browned. In good condition overall. Small oval title-page stamp with ducal coronet and initials (unidentified). Scattered early ink annotations, mostly marginal. (4 ll.), 280 pp. *** Later edition of a popular manual for use in civil and criminal courts, aimed not at experienced judges but at juizes ordinarios who have little in the way of experience or practice. The work first appeared in Lisbon, 1748, and was in print for over a hundred years. We have seen references to editions of 1750, 1751, 1755, 1766, 1792, 1804 (apparently 2 editions), and 1854. This edition claims to be free of the "muitos, e enormes erros" of the earlier editions. The first part contains much material on orphans, wills, settling estates, and public sale of goods. The second mentions inquests, bail, prisons, physical and verbal abuse, and rap sheets. Gomes often includes references more authoritative legal works.Alexandre Caetano Gomes (Chaves, 1705 - ?) was a secular presbyter and an advocate in Lisbon.*** Innocêncio I, 29-30. Not located in Porbase, which cites 2 copies of a work with a slightly different title and 271, (3) pp., but with the same imprint, both in the Biblioteca Tomás Ribeiro, Tondela. Not located in NUC.

First Edition
4°, disbound. Woodcut vignette on title page. In very good condition. (2 ll.), 23 pp. *** FIRST EDITION. In the Carta, dated 15 August 1745, the author discusses the political situation in Europe, predicting that the Grand Duke of Tuscany will be elected Holy Roman Emperor; he also traces the connection between the sovereign state of Lorraine and the Roman Empire of the East and West, from the time of Charlemagne to the present. A second letter, dated 30 Sept. 1745 (not present here: Carta de hum amigo, assistente na Corte de Lisboa, a outro assistente no estado do Brasil, em que lhe dá conta da eleição do Emperador, e hum discurso sobre a paz geral, que della se espera .) discussed the election of the Grand Duke as Emperor Francis I and the possibilities for an end to the War of the Austrian Succession.Barata is identified by Fonseca as João Baptista de Castro (1700-1775), secular presbyter at the Cathedral of his native Lisbon; but Fonseca does not list either of the present works. Innocêncio lists them as the work of Alexandre Caetano Gomes, a native of Chaves who was a secular presbyter and an advocate in Lisbon, but notes that they were published ("dadas á luz") by João Baptista de Castro.*** Alden & Landis 745/94. Innocêncio I, 30. Cf. Fonseca, Pseudónimos p. 18. Not in Borba de Moraes. Not located in BMC. NUC: RPJCB (lacking title-page, and bound with the Carta . Emperador).
