About this Item: Alph. Lebègue et Sacré Fils, Brussels, 1844. Hardcover. Condition: fine. First Edition. 5 vols. 1st edition (jamais vu), preceding all other editions including multiple Brussels editions from Meline, Muquardt, and Société Belge de Librairie Hauman, as well as Baudry's 1844 Paris edition (issued last of all the 1844 editions). 1st issue (Lebègue in 18mo.) preceding their reissue in 24mo. This is the real 1st edition, listed first by Munro (Alexandre Dumas Père. A Bibliography of Works Published in French) without dispute, and prior to any other 1844 edition. It's also the rarest edition of Mousquetaires. Full French, glazed and diced, blindstamped paper covered boards. Pinpoint rubs to corners, page 183 in vol. V with a short tear to the margin (just touching but not taking 2 letters of text), else fine, complete with all 5 half-titles, and all 10 original printed wrappers (front and back) bound in. An amazing unearthing, rare by any criterion. Munro lists a set (not ours) so that makes 2 recorded, but let me continue. No copies of this Lebègue edition at auction in 50 years (the only Brussels editions sold at auction in that time were 2 copies, 13 years ago, of Meline's Brussels and Leipzig imprint, the 2nd Meline edition, the 6th overall, and the most common of the 7 Brussels editions, by 4 publishers, listed by Munro in 1844). More surprisingly, OCLC located no (zero) sets of this Lebègue 1st edition in any National or University library, and only single volumes I, II, and V at Sommerpalais, Germany (OCLC does record libraries holding sets of the other Brussels editions and, of course, extensive holdings of Baudry's Paris edition). Coll: [1]-181, [1,blank]. [1]-172. [1]-171, [1 blank]. [1]-163. [1 blank]. [1]-223, [1 blank] pp. Let me repeat. This is the true 1st edition of Les Trois Mousquetaires, as recorded in the most current and most comprehensive bibliography, one of 2 known sets, and think about this. No other 19th century novel with stature comparable to Les Trois Mousquetaires has a census that shows it to be anywhere near as rare. Tous pour un, un pour tous. The 1st appearance was a daily serialization in the newspaper Le Siècle (The Century) from March 14 to July 14, 1844. The Brussels editions were also serialized 1 volume at a time as soon as enough of the novel had appeared in the newspaper to make up a volume, and the mosh pit frenzy of the Brussels publishers to get the progressive volumes of their editions out as quickly as possible, insures that each individual volume's exact date of publication will remain an open question. That said, Lebègue's edition holds supremacy as the 1st because their edition had both its first and last volumes issued before the others, and there is no doubt it's the rarest. And beyond rational dispute is that all the 1844 Brussels editions precede the 1844 Paris edition (it's more sure with this title than with many others) because after the serial was completed, and with the Brussels editions fully published and being sold, Dumas casually opened Paris book publication rights for bidding while he unnecessarily revised the text (most who have read both texts agree the original is better than the revised). The winner (in a feisty rivalry) was finally Baudry, and he paid a lot for the Paris rights so his printing was larger than usual, but despite his edition not having priority over any Brussels edition, and being more common than any of the other Paris editions of Dumas' foremost novels, it would still be preferred in some Continental circles, though in wider circles "1st edition" still carries all the weight. And yes, it's odd that Baudry's 1st Paris edition of Les Trois Mousquetaires is the most common of the Paris 1st editions of Dumas' major novels, while Lebègue's true 1st edition of it seems the rarest one all. Contemporary half calf over marbled paper boards, flat spines gilt, lettered direct in gilt, all edges sprinkled blue. A fine copy. THE ORIGINAL VERSION OF THE THREE MUSKETEERS: THE COMPLETE TRILOGY IN VERY RARE EARLY BRUSSELS EDITIONS, the original printings of the novels. Predating the first Paris editions, and preserving Dumas' original text-extensively revised in all the Paris and subsequent editions. With the complete chapter Le Bonhomme Broussel, lacking in the Paris and subsequent editions. The first Paris editions of the Three Musketeers trilogy are legendarily rare: there are probably only two libraries worldwide with complete sets (Yale and the Bibiliothèque Nationale de France). The Brussels editions that preceded the first Paris editions appear to be equally rare in libraries: we have been able to locate only two complete sets (Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, University of Göttingen). They are certainly equally rare on the market (see below). The present set includes the following editions, as set out in Munro's Alexandre Dumas Père, A Bibliography of Works published in French 1825-1900: fifth Brussels edition of Les Trois Mousquetaires, preceding the first Paris edition (Munro p. 143); third Brussels edition of Vingt Ans Après, preceding the first Paris edition (Munro p. 165); sixth Brussels edition of Le Vicomte de Bragelonne, preceding the first Paris edition (Munro p. 195). THE BRUSSELS EDITIONS OF THE THREE MUSKETEERS The Brussels editions of the Three Musketeers remain mysterious and little-understood. It was long assumed that the novels first appeared in book form in Paris, following their serial publication in the Parisian newspaper Le Siècle. In 1924, however, Laurent Carteret, in his Trésor du bibliophile Romantique et Moderne, drew attention (without giving any details) to the existence of a group of Brussels printings of the novels-the first acknowledgement of the Brussels editions in any major bibliography (Carteret p, 235). In 1935, the next significant bibliography of French literature, Hector Talvart and Joseph Place's Bibliographie des auteurs modernes de langue francaise, assembled details on about 22 Brussels editions of Dumas. For Vingt Ans Après, for example, we find: "N.B. En 1845, une edition de Vingt Ans Après a paru à Bruxelles chez Meline, Can et Cie en 6 vol. . ." And for Le Vicomte de Bragelonne: "N.B. Cet ouvrage, auquel Aug. Macquet a collaboré, a paru également en 1848-50 à Bruxelles, chez Meline, Cans et Cie, en 13 vol. . ." BIBLIOGRAPHIES OF T . . . (FULL DESCRIPTION ON REQUEST). About this Item: Burgess, Stringer and Company,, New York:, 1846. Condition: Very Good. M. Valentin (illustrator). First U.S. edition. Two volumes in one, as issued, freshly re-bound in three-quarter leather over marbled boards. This famous tale of revenge and retribution, of which the publisher said "his African blood is warm, and in his pages we accordingly discover the glowings of a heart gushing with feeling.," was inspired by Dumas' own Haitian-born father, an enslaved black man. Two editions were published in the U.S. in 1846; the other being in Boston. Though no known priority has been established, the bibliographies available to us (F.W. Reed, London: 1933 and Douglas Munro, New York: 1978) list only this one and we therefore believe it to be the first. Further, Reed's bibliography states an American reprint was issued the same year as the Burgess, Stringer edition, "but with plates so badly printed as to be almost caricatures of the original." Both the New York and Boston editions are based on the Chapman & Hall, London edition of the same year and include 12 of the 20 M. Valentin illustrations, as called for. [Rusty Mott of the bookselling firm Howard S. Mott, Inc., kindly pointed us to an 1847 ad in Marguerite Blessington's MARMADUKE HERBERT for this book; the ad states, "The work is published in one large Volume, likewise in two Volumes:--in either form it is sold at One Dollar, accompanied by Twelve splendid engravings"]. The Boston edition has appeared twice at auction (in 1940 & 1997). There are NO AUCTION OR SALE RECORDS of this New York edition and only a handful of copies in libraries worldwide making it AN ACTUAL RARE BOOK. Pages a little age-darkened and light foxing or staining, primarily to margins, throughout. Still textually good to very good with the binding being quite fine. Seller Inventory # 53637

About this Item: Simms and McIntyre, UK, 1848. Three-Quarter Leather. Condition: Near Fine. New Edition. New Edition 1848. Second printing of the true first edition in English based on the original text. This text first appearance in English of "Le Comte De Monte Christo."; complete as issued in three parts of The Parlour Novelist and the first and only translation into English based upon the original text of the novel. ) The Simms and M'Intyre translation by Emma Hardy (credited as being the first English translation in the foreword to the 2008 Oxford University Press edition of Monte Cristo) was clearly based on the original text of the novel as it first appeared in the Journal de Debats. The confirmation of this can be found in two rather minor but essential points of issue; the date of 24th of February in the first line of the novel (later revised to 28th February) and the spelling of "Christo" with an "h" throughout; this spelling was the one retained in the Paris and Brussels editions and was only changed to Cristo for the first illustrated edition (Paris, Au Bureau de L'Echo Des Feuilletons, 1846). The second English translation was the one commissioned by Chapman and Hall. This was This was based upon the revised text of the novel, with the date of 28th of February in the first line and the "h" dropped from Christo. The source text was most likely the above mentioned L'Echo Des Feuilletons edition. According to Munro and Sadleir the Chapman and Hall edition (May) appeared after the Simms M'Intyre Parlour Novelist vol. 3 (March). Complete sets of the 3 volumes of the Simms M'Intyre edition are very rare. Three volumes bound as one retaining the original title pages. A very rare edition. Book is fine and bright. Contents average with age toned pages. Recentley bound in three quarter leather and hand marbled boards. More images can be taken upon request. Ref11743 Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. About this Item: H.S. Nichols, London, 1895. Limited large-paper English edition of the elder Alexandre Dumas's true crime narratives, number 15 of 25 copies, printed on Japanese vellum with the photogravure illustrations in two states. First published in French in 1839 and 1840, the collection includes essays on the Borgias, Martin Guerre, Mary Stuart, and Beatrice Cenci, as well as modern criminals such as the poisoner Antoine Derues and the assassin Karl Ludwig Sand. Most notable is the historical account of the Man in the Iron Mask, a real prisoner of the Sun King whose plight would inspire the final chapter of Dumas's d'Artagnan romances: "The imagination is fired at the thought of that enforced dumbness, of that lifetime of reflections which the features did not betray, of that isolation for forty years confined within double walls of stone and iron." A fine deluxe set, splendidly bound. Eight octavo volumes, contemporary full plum crushed morocco gilt, boards ruled in gilt, raised bands, spine compartments elaborately tooled in gilt with a fleur-de-lis motif, top edges gilt, other edges uncut. Title pages in red and black, text printed on vellum, all volumes illustrated with photogravures in two states throughout text. Seller Inventory # 1001525
