About this Item: Paris: Baudry, 1844, 1844. 8 volumes, octavo. Original yellow wrappers, titles to spines and covers in black, fore and bottom edges untrimmed. Housed in red quarter morocco solander boxes by the Chelsea Bindery. A little skilful conservation to spines, trivial loss to some ends, front joint of vol. II neatly reattached, faint marginal foxing to contents. A very nice copy of this scarce publication, in bright wrappers. First separate edition, extremely rare in the original wrappers. The author's best-known work and one of his two masterpieces, Les Trois Mousquetaires was originally published earlier the same year as a serial novel in the Parisian newspaper Le Siècle, from 14 March to 1 July 1844. The Three Musketeers "has become the archetypal adventure story, as well as the best known and the most widely read (and adapted) of all French novels. In the historical context of its production it was also the prototype of the roman-feuilleton (serial novel), which enjoyed phenomenal success in the 1840s. It provided a natural outlet for Alexandre Dumas's talents and energies as he combined elements of the historical romance of Sir Walter Scott with the formulas and themes of the romantic feuilleton. This 'Homeric clash of Titans', as David Coward described it, immediately became a best-seller, and was quickly translated into several languages, with no less than six pirated Belgian editions on the market in the year of publication. As Anthony Burgess noted, Dumas was truly 'one of the great myth-makers of his and any age'" (Murray, p. 118). Murray, Encyclopedia of the Romantic Era, 1760-1850, Vol. II, 2004; Coward (ed.), The Three Musketeers, 1991. Seller Inventory # 124078

With all the half-titles. Contemporary half calf over marbled paper boards, flat spines gilt, lettered direct in gilt, all edges sprinkled blue. A fine copy. THE ORIGINAL VERSION OF THE THREE MUSKETEERS: THE COMPLETE TRILOGY IN VERY RARE EARLY BRUSSELS EDITIONS, the original printings of the novels. Predating the first Paris editions, and preserving Dumas' original text-extensively revised in all the Paris and subsequent editions. With the complete chapter Le Bonhomme Broussel, lacking in the Paris and subsequent editions. The first Paris editions of the Three Musketeers trilogy are legendarily rare: there are probably only two libraries worldwide with complete sets (Yale and the Bibiliothèque Nationale de France). The Brussels editions that preceded the first Paris editions appear to be equally rare in libraries: we have been able to locate only two complete sets (Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, University of Göttingen). They are certainly equally rare on the market (see below). The present set includes the following editions, as set out in Munro's Alexandre Dumas Père, A Bibliography of Works published in French 1825-1900: fifth Brussels edition of Les Trois Mousquetaires, preceding the first Paris edition (Munro p. 143); third Brussels edition of Vingt Ans Après, preceding the first Paris edition (Munro p. 165); sixth Brussels edition of Le Vicomte de Bragelonne, preceding the first Paris edition (Munro p. 195). THE BRUSSELS EDITIONS OF THE THREE MUSKETEERS The Brussels editions of the Three Musketeers remain mysterious and little-understood. It was long assumed that the novels first appeared in book form in Paris, following their serial publication in the Parisian newspaper Le Siècle. In 1924, however, Laurent Carteret, in his Trésor du bibliophile Romantique et Moderne, drew attention (without giving any details) to the existence of a group of Brussels printings of the novels-the first acknowledgement of the Brussels editions in any major bibliography (Carteret p, 235). In 1935, the next significant bibliography of French literature, Hector Talvart and Joseph Place's Bibliographie des auteurs modernes de langue francaise, assembled details on about 22 Brussels editions of Dumas. For Vingt Ans Après, for example, we find: "N.B. En 1845, une edition de Vingt Ans Après a paru à Bruxelles chez Meline, Can et Cie en 6 vol. . ." And for Le Vicomte de Bragelonne: "N.B. Cet ouvrage, auquel Aug. Macquet a collaboré, a paru également en 1848-50 à Bruxelles, chez Meline, Cans et Cie, en 13 vol. . ." BIBLIOGRAPHIES OF T . . . (FULL DESCRIPTION ON REQUEST). About this Item: Simms and McIntyre, UK, 1848. Three-Quarter Leather. Condition: Near Fine. New Edition. New Edition 1848. Second printing of the true first edition in English based on the original text. This text first appearance in English of "Le Comte De Monte Christo."; complete as issued in three parts of The Parlour Novelist and the first and only translation into English based upon the original text of the novel. ) The Simms and M'Intyre translation by Emma Hardy (credited as being the first English translation in the foreword to the 2008 Oxford University Press edition of Monte Cristo) was clearly based on the original text of the novel as it first appeared in the Journal de Debats. The confirmation of this can be found in two rather minor but essential points of issue; the date of 24th of February in the first line of the novel (later revised to 28th February) and the spelling of "Christo" with an "h" throughout; this spelling was the one retained in the Paris and Brussels editions and was only changed to Cristo for the first illustrated edition (Paris, Au Bureau de L'Echo Des Feuilletons, 1846). The second English translation was the one commissioned by Chapman and Hall. This was This was based upon the revised text of the novel, with the date of 28th of February in the first line and the "h" dropped from Christo. The source text was most likely the above mentioned L'Echo Des Feuilletons edition. According to Munro and Sadleir the Chapman and Hall edition (May) appeared after the Simms M'Intyre Parlour Novelist vol. 3 (March). Complete sets of the 3 volumes of the Simms M'Intyre edition are very rare. Three volumes bound as one retaining the original title pages. A very rare edition. Book is fine and bright. Contents average with age toned pages. Recentley bound in three quarter leather and hand marbled boards. More images can be taken upon request. Ref11743 Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. About this Item: Simms and M'Intyre, W. S. Orr and Co., Belfast and London, 1846. First edition. TRUE FIRST APPEARANCE IN ENGLISH OF THE COUNT OF MONTE CHRISTO. THE ONLY ENGLISH TRANSLATION BASED ON THE ORIGINAL TEXT OF THE NOVEL. Octavo (160 × 100 mm.), pp. [8], 400, [2]. With the engraved part-title, half-title, and leaf of publisher's advertisements. Original publisher's plum cloth, decorated in blind, spine lettered in gilt, yellow coated endpapers. Very occasional slight spots, spine rubbed and darkened, slight restorations to extremities. TRUE FIRST APPEARANCE IN ENGLISH, very rare, of any part of Le Comte de Monte Christo, and the first and only English translation based on the original text of the novel. With the original date of 24 February in the first line of the text, and the original spelling of "Monte Christo" throughout. Predating the Chapman and Hall edition of the same year. In the original publisher's cloth. Le Comte de Monte Christo first appeared as a serial in the Parisian newspaper Le Journal des Debats from 28 August 1844 to 15 January 1846. This was followed by a Brussels edition in book form (1845-1846), set up from the Journal des Débats and issued in parts, followed by a Paris edition in book form (1845-1846, now a very rare and sought-after book: the last copy to appear at auction sold for EUR 253,000 (Christie's Paris 21/4/2010)). English publishers were quick to respond to the remarkable popularity of the novel in France. First to start bringing out Monte Christo in English were Simms, M'Intyre and Orr, at the beginning of March 1846, just six weeks after the final instalment of the novel in Le Journal des Débats. Like the Brussels publishers, Simms and M'Intyre issued the novel in parts: the first third of the text (the action in Marseilles and the Chateau D'If) appeared under the title of The Chateau D'If, as volume 3 of The Parlour Novelist, a popular series published by Simms and M'Intyre between 1846 and 1863 (Sadleir vol. 2 p. 146). Following the success of The Chateau D'If, Simms and M'Intyre brought out the remaining portion of the text (the action in Rome and Paris) a little later as volumes 8 and 9 of The Parlour Novelist, under the title of The Count of Monte Christo. The title-pages of all three volumes give the translator as Emma Hardy. Simms and M'Intyre state their priority in the preface at the beginning of The Chateau D'If: "In presenting the following translation to the English Public, the publishers feel considerable gratification in being the first to make known to them this charming romance, the chef d'oeuvre of the most distinguished of French Novelists, ALEXANDRE DUMAS. . . Belfast, March 1, 1846" (p. [5]). The Simms and M'Intyre translation was based on the original text of the novel as it first appeared in Le Journal des Débats. This is confirmed by the date of 24 February in the first line of the text (later revised to 28 February), and the spelling of Christo with an "h" throughout (this spelling was retained in the early Paris and Brussels editions, and was only changed to Cristo in the later first illustrated edition (Paris, Au Bureau de L'Écho Des Feuilletons, 1846)). A second English translation (the first illustrated English translation) of Monte Christo (The Count of Monte-Cristo [sic], London, Chapman & Hall, translator unknown) also appeared in 1846. This was based on a revised text of the novel, (most obviously identified by the date of 28 February in the first line, and the spelling of Cristo without an "h" throughout). The source text for the Chapman & Hall edition was possibly the first illustrated edition published in Paris. According to Munro and Sadleir, the Chapman & Hall edition appeared after the first part of the Simms and M'Intyre edition, Parlour Novelist vol. 3, and probably just before Parlour Novelist vols. 8 and 9. "Although Parlour Novelist Nos. 8 and 9 in all likelihood post-dated the Chapman and Hall edition, No. 3 pre-dated i . . . (FULL DESCRIPTION ON REQUEST). Seller Inventory # NM00060

About this Item: London: Methuen, [1904], 1904. Octavo, pp. 8 [advertisements]; 115. In publisher's decorated wraps, white card overprinted in red and black. Front of book features stylised titles and author's name bordered by a sword design, with central image of the 'wolf-leader' surrounded by a pack of ferocious wolves. Book is in extremely good condition, with very light edgewear, an ink number to left extremity of front panel and superficial chips to the spine panel. Clean, crisp and bright with border colours vivid around the striking Frank Adams cover illustration. Internally crisp and clean, with the customary reams of advertisements for Whelpton's Purifying Pills and Swan Fountain Pens preceding the story. Described as 'One of the best Werewolf novels ever written', this is a chilling tale of a man who gains the ability to control wolves after begging for assistance in his revenge against a persecutor, from a giant talking wolf walking on its hind legs. This extremely fragile item is in near-fine condition, making a rare survival. Dumas' novel is superb, teeming with rich Gothic description, humour, and provocative sentiment; 'And as we travel nearer and nearer to the grave, do we again draw closer, ever closer to the cradle?'. About this Item: Richard Bentley. 1842, 1842. Functionally bound in later dark green half calf, green cloth boards, paper labels; worn & repaired. SCARCE. La Comtesse de Salisbury, 1839. An unacknowledged translation of one of Dumas? earliest historical novels. It is set in the Court of Edward III during the earlier stages of the Hundred Years War. The dedication, to Thomas Moore, is signed ?E.R.M. London, April, 1840?; perhaps the translator, but not identified. The third volume, despite having The Countess of Salisbury on the titlepage, contains, as issued, a separate novel, also an unacknowledged translation of a Dumas work: The Maid of Corinth. The French title is Acté, first published in 1838. This appears to be a re-issue of the first English edition of 1840, with newly printed titlepages which for some reason do not mention the second work. No 1842 edition appears on Copac, though four copies of an 1840 edition are listed with the title as The Countess of Salisbury : to which is added, The Maid of Corinth. Dumas is not identified as the original author. Seller Inventory # 71127

About this Item: Chapman & Hall. 1843, 1843. Contemp. half dark brown morocco; sl. rubbing but a good-plus copy. Armorial bookplate of Dorest County Museum & Library. Crimes Célèbres, 1839-41. FIRST ENGLISH EDITION, translating 10 of the 18 stories that appeared in the French original. One of the stories, Vaninka, appeared as The Red House in 1842, translated by Catherine Gore as part of Modern French Life. These little histories of French infamy proved hugely significant in the writing career of Dumas père. Many of the themes were returned to by the writer in later years, most famously L'Homme au Masque de Fer, not translated in the present collection, but included in the original French publication. Several of the original stories were written in collaboration with other authors such as Arnould and Fournier. Seller Inventory # 71161
