About this Item: Pas de couverture. Condition: Bon. Seller Inventory # ABE-17887244909

About this Item: Simms and McIntyre, UK, 1848. Three-Quarter Leather. Condition: Near Fine. New Edition. New Edition 1848. Second printing of the true first edition in English based on the original text. This text first appearance in English of "Le Comte De Monte Christo."; complete as issued in three parts of The Parlour Novelist and the first and only translation into English based upon the original text of the novel. ) The Simms and M'Intyre translation by Emma Hardy (credited as being the first English translation in the foreword to the 2008 Oxford University Press edition of Monte Cristo) was clearly based on the original text of the novel as it first appeared in the Journal de Debats. The confirmation of this can be found in two rather minor but essential points of issue; the date of 24th of February in the first line of the novel (later revised to 28th February) and the spelling of "Christo" with an "h" throughout; this spelling was the one retained in the Paris and Brussels editions and was only changed to Cristo for the first illustrated edition (Paris, Au Bureau de L'Echo Des Feuilletons, 1846). The second English translation was the one commissioned by Chapman and Hall. This was This was based upon the revised text of the novel, with the date of 28th of February in the first line and the "h" dropped from Christo. The source text was most likely the above mentioned L'Echo Des Feuilletons edition. According to Munro and Sadleir the Chapman and Hall edition (May) appeared after the Simms M'Intyre Parlour Novelist vol. 3 (March). Complete sets of the 3 volumes of the Simms M'Intyre edition are very rare. Three volumes bound as one retaining the original title pages. A very rare edition. Book is fine and bright. Contents average with age toned pages. Recentley bound in three quarter leather and hand marbled boards. More images can be taken upon request. Ref11743 Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. About this Item: Simms and M'Intyre, W. S. Orr and Co., Belfast and London, 1846. First edition. TRUE FIRST APPEARANCE IN ENGLISH OF THE COUNT OF MONTE CHRISTO. THE ONLY ENGLISH TRANSLATION BASED ON THE ORIGINAL TEXT OF THE NOVEL. Octavo (160 × 100 mm.), pp. [8], 400, [2]. With the engraved part-title, half-title, and leaf of publisher's advertisements. Original publisher's plum cloth, decorated in blind, spine lettered in gilt, yellow coated endpapers. Very occasional slight spots, spine rubbed and darkened, slight restorations to extremities. TRUE FIRST APPEARANCE IN ENGLISH, very rare, of any part of Le Comte de Monte Christo, and the first and only English translation based on the original text of the novel. With the original date of 24 February in the first line of the text, and the original spelling of "Monte Christo" throughout. Predating the Chapman and Hall edition of the same year. In the original publisher's cloth. Le Comte de Monte Christo first appeared as a serial in the Parisian newspaper Le Journal des Debats from 28 August 1844 to 15 January 1846. This was followed by a Brussels edition in book form (1845-1846), set up from the Journal des Débats and issued in parts, followed by a Paris edition in book form (1845-1846, now a very rare and sought-after book: the last copy to appear at auction sold for EUR 253,000 (Christie's Paris 21/4/2010)). English publishers were quick to respond to the remarkable popularity of the novel in France. First to start bringing out Monte Christo in English were Simms, M'Intyre and Orr, at the beginning of March 1846, just six weeks after the final instalment of the novel in Le Journal des Débats. Like the Brussels publishers, Simms and M'Intyre issued the novel in parts: the first third of the text (the action in Marseilles and the Chateau D'If) appeared under the title of The Chateau D'If, as volume 3 of The Parlour Novelist, a popular series published by Simms and M'Intyre between 1846 and 1863 (Sadleir vol. 2 p. 146). Following the success of The Chateau D'If, Simms and M'Intyre brought out the remaining portion of the text (the action in Rome and Paris) a little later as volumes 8 and 9 of The Parlour Novelist, under the title of The Count of Monte Christo. The title-pages of all three volumes give the translator as Emma Hardy. Simms and M'Intyre state their priority in the preface at the beginning of The Chateau D'If: "In presenting the following translation to the English Public, the publishers feel considerable gratification in being the first to make known to them this charming romance, the chef d'oeuvre of the most distinguished of French Novelists, ALEXANDRE DUMAS. . . Belfast, March 1, 1846" (p. [5]). The Simms and M'Intyre translation was based on the original text of the novel as it first appeared in Le Journal des Débats. This is confirmed by the date of 24 February in the first line of the text (later revised to 28 February), and the spelling of Christo with an "h" throughout (this spelling was retained in the early Paris and Brussels editions, and was only changed to Cristo in the later first illustrated edition (Paris, Au Bureau de L'Écho Des Feuilletons, 1846)). A second English translation (the first illustrated English translation) of Monte Christo (The Count of Monte-Cristo [sic], London, Chapman & Hall, translator unknown) also appeared in 1846. This was based on a revised text of the novel, (most obviously identified by the date of 28 February in the first line, and the spelling of Cristo without an "h" throughout). The source text for the Chapman & Hall edition was possibly the first illustrated edition published in Paris. According to Munro and Sadleir, the Chapman & Hall edition appeared after the first part of the Simms and M'Intyre edition, Parlour Novelist vol. 3, and probably just before Parlour Novelist vols. 8 and 9. "Although Parlour Novelist Nos. 8 and 9 in all likelihood post-dated the Chapman and Hall edition, No. 3 pre-dated i . . . (FULL DESCRIPTION ON REQUEST). Seller Inventory # NM00060

About this Item: H.S. Nichols, London, 1895. Limited large-paper English edition of the elder Alexandre Dumas's true crime narratives, number 15 of 25 copies, printed on Japanese vellum with the photogravure illustrations in two states. First published in French in 1839 and 1840, the collection includes essays on the Borgias, Martin Guerre, Mary Stuart, and Beatrice Cenci, as well as modern criminals such as the poisoner Antoine Derues and the assassin Karl Ludwig Sand. Most notable is the historical account of the Man in the Iron Mask, a real prisoner of the Sun King whose plight would inspire the final chapter of Dumas's d'Artagnan romances: "The imagination is fired at the thought of that enforced dumbness, of that lifetime of reflections which the features did not betray, of that isolation for forty years confined within double walls of stone and iron." A fine deluxe set, splendidly bound. Eight octavo volumes, contemporary full plum crushed morocco gilt, boards ruled in gilt, raised bands, spine compartments elaborately tooled in gilt with a fleur-de-lis motif, top edges gilt, other edges uncut. Title pages in red and black, text printed on vellum, all volumes illustrated with photogravures in two states throughout text. Seller Inventory # 1001525

About this Item: Société belge de librairie Hauman, Brussels, 1845. Cloth. Condition: Very good. First Edition. 7 vols. in 3. 1st edition (in French), 1st issue (16mo. in 7 vols.). This 1st edition is the real deal, unquestionably preceding Baudry's Paris edition, and Hauman's own 2nd edition (18mo. in 10 vols.), the 3 other 1845 Brussels editions, and all the rest. Any arguments against its priority test logic. Munro clearly states that this edition, and this issue of it, is the 1st of all, and no one has cogently tendered any other sequence. 19th century purple cloth, spines faded to tan, very good, bound without half-titles but otherwise whole, with Romanesque Aventure de ma vie, par le Bibliophile Jacob, filling out the final 93 pages of vol. VII, as issued. Compelling, appealing, and scarce, and though this edition's priority over the Paris edition is sure, some collectors would pay 20 times our price for Baudry's edition and swear it is the only one bestowing pride of ownership, while others would insist that 1st is always best. And that's because each of us looks at any given book, and sees what we see, and what we see is not always the same. Like sometimes I look into the face of our dog (Lily the Kid) and see fatalistic sadness and wistful anguish, when all she is really doing is staring at the lamp waiting for a circling moth to run out of gas. Twenty Years After is the first sequel to The Three Musketeers, set in the political upheaval of 1648-1649, and I'll maintain it's the most historical of Dumas' historical romances. It opens during 2 civil wars, and only the charisma of the Musketeers could possibly hold up the fictional portion of the plotline, against the dizzying storms of such volatile historical events, coincident and parallel revolts against the absolute power of the crown, the parliamentary insurrection in France of the first Fronde (which mostly collapsed into the Peace of Rueil, and 3 years of fragmented, factional intrigues) and those in England of Cromwell's second Civil War (which culminated in the 1649 execution of King Charles I and the establishment of the Commonwealth). The historical action first divides, then occupies, then infects, engulfs, and finally reunites the Musketeers, now all grown up, savvy, constant, dynamic, and ready for the personal defiance demanded by the times. About this Item: Pas de couverture. About this Item: N. p., 12. - Scattered toning.
