About this Item: George Peirce, London, 1846. wrappers. Condition: Very good. First Edition. 6 vols. 1st edition in English, 1st issue in parts (all covers numbered by hand). Original wrappers, part VI with chips to the back, else very good, complete, unrepaired, and rare as rooster eggs. Dumas wrote this adventure as a high tension anxiety (ticking clock/jail-break plotline), to be the central novel in his series about the French Revolution, but as he got deeper into the others (Memoirs of a Physician, 1848, Queen's Necklace, 1850, Ange Pitou, 1851, and Countess of Charny, 1854) the nuances of the series' overlapping cast (mainly Phillipe de Taverney) no longer fit. So he let the novel stand alone, and it does so with resilient fame. Ex-Bob Jackson, this very set (not that they could have found another) was last seen 19 years ago at the Grolier Club, in their exhibit, Essential Parts (recorded on page 16 of their 1996 catalog). The Red House (La Maison-Rouge) were the ferociously dedicated, and heroically resolute, personal guard of King Louis XVI and his family, so named for their brilliant red cloaks. Dumas resurrects their shadowy leader, The Red Knight himself, as his secret agent in disguise, the tip of a royalist spear, leading Batz's inspired intrigue (The Carnation Conspiracy) to rescue Marie Antoinette from the prison at the Conciergerie. The result is breathtaking reader whiplash, remindful of the disquiet in Shakespeare's Julius Caesar (the exemplar for a choice of heroes, wherein both sides are positive they are in the right), and it presages with a clear prescience the James Bond bravura of action spy, and the Mission Impossible style of whirlpool count-down plotline. About this Item: 1863. Six sheets of neatly written autograph manuscript on light blue paper, headed "Les Bagnes", each sheet measuring 276 x 215 mm., preserved in a neat modern slipcase. An important and revealing manuscript essay on prisons and convict transportation by the author of The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo. The essay almost certainly dates from the period when Dumas was the editor of the pro-Garibaldi newspaper L'Indipendente in Italy, as can be divined from several of the internal references he makes, notably a reference to "La Pruny", presumably his mis-spelling of the settlement of Prony in New Caledonia. The first French prisoners sent to New Caledonia arrived in May 1864 on board L'Iphigénie at Port-de-France, and Dumas has apparently taken the smaller settlement of Prony to represent the entire prison system. The discussion of the prisons of Europe and the proper role of government marks this out as a significant contribution to our understanding of the political thought of the great novelist, the more so as it includes his notes on the earlier English example of transportation to Australia, with Dumas writing approvingly of the practice in Botany Bay and, rather confusingly, Port Phillip.Alexandre Dumas's life was more colourful than that of some of his swashbuckling fictional heroes. His father was a General and war hero of Haitian and noble descent. Born Alexandre Dumas Davy de la Pailleterie he was reputed to have kept over 40 mistresses and fathered a number of illegitimate children. He started his career as a notary to the Duc d'Orléans, later King Louis Philippe. However, in the 1850s he fell out of favour with Napoleon III, and he left Paris for Belgium (an action that was part political exile, part escape from creditors). He spent time in Russia where his novels were widely read and Dumas himself was a celebrity (French being the language of the aristocracy). His political leanings led him to settle in Naples where he was a friend and confidant of Garibaldi, and together the two men founded the paper L'Indipendente in October 1860; it is for that politically-minded journal that the present article was probably written though, we have not succeeded in tracing its publication.Dumas wrote prolifically and had an astonishing output of essays and articles. In this six page essay, he turns his humanitarian scrutiny on Les Bagnes and the practice, re-instituted in the Second Empire, of transporting prisoners to penal colonies. In 1854 legislation had been passed that formally established the South American territory of French Guiana as a destination for common-law criminals convicted of felonies (expanded in 1864 to include the South Pacific island of New Caledonia, amid reports of high death tolls from malaria and yellow fever). This law specified that convicts sentenced to hard labor no longer be sent to the port cities of Brest, Rochefort, and Toulon - where they had worked in the dockyards since the decommission of the government's Mediterranean galley fleet - but instead serve their sentences in French Guiana as prisoners and ultimately forced colonists. French Guiana was indeed a savage fate for French prisoners, not least because of the infamous "Devil's Island", the locale of the later novel Papillon. It is fair to say that Dumas was not enthusiastic about the practice, preferring to suggest that the "philosopher" should take the longer view, and work not only for improvement but rehabilitation. Much in the style of earlier prison reformers of the Enlightenment, Dumas starts with a brief overview of the conditions in European prisons, particularly those of Southern Italy, where some 35,000 were banged up ("it seems impossible" - cela nous semble impossible - he exclaims). His critique focusses on the need for education rather than mere slave labour, and he states that the proper concern of Parliament should be for the welfare of the prisoner until rehabilitation, allowing Dumas a rather grand opportunity t. About this Item: Simms and M'Intyre, W. S. Orr and Co., Belfast and London, 1846. First edition. TRUE FIRST APPEARANCE IN ENGLISH OF THE COUNT OF MONTE CHRISTO. THE ONLY ENGLISH TRANSLATION BASED ON THE ORIGINAL TEXT OF THE NOVEL. Octavo (160 × 100 mm.), pp. [8], 400, [2]. With the engraved part-title, half-title, and leaf of publisher's advertisements. Original publisher's plum cloth, decorated in blind, spine lettered in gilt, yellow coated endpapers. Very occasional slight spots, spine rubbed and darkened, slight restorations to extremities. TRUE FIRST APPEARANCE IN ENGLISH, very rare, of any part of Le Comte de Monte Christo, and the first and only English translation based on the original text of the novel. With the original date of 24 February in the first line of the text, and the original spelling of "Monte Christo" throughout. Predating the Chapman and Hall edition of the same year. In the original publisher's cloth. Le Comte de Monte Christo first appeared as a serial in the Parisian newspaper Le Journal des Debats from 28 August 1844 to 15 January 1846. This was followed by a Brussels edition in book form (1845-1846), set up from the Journal des Débats and issued in parts, followed by a Paris edition in book form (1845-1846, now a very rare and sought-after book: the last copy to appear at auction sold for EUR 253,000 (Christie's Paris 21/4/2010)). English publishers were quick to respond to the remarkable popularity of the novel in France. First to start bringing out Monte Christo in English were Simms, M'Intyre and Orr, at the beginning of March 1846, just six weeks after the final instalment of the novel in Le Journal des Débats. Like the Brussels publishers, Simms and M'Intyre issued the novel in parts: the first third of the text (the action in Marseilles and the Chateau D'If) appeared under the title of The Chateau D'If, as volume 3 of The Parlour Novelist, a popular series published by Simms and M'Intyre between 1846 and 1863 (Sadleir vol. 2 p. 146). Following the success of The Chateau D'If, Simms and M'Intyre brought out the remaining portion of the text (the action in Rome and Paris) a little later as volumes 8 and 9 of The Parlour Novelist, under the title of The Count of Monte Christo. The title-pages of all three volumes give the translator as Emma Hardy. Simms and M'Intyre state their priority in the preface at the beginning of The Chateau D'If: "In presenting the following translation to the English Public, the publishers feel considerable gratification in being the first to make known to them this charming romance, the chef d'oeuvre of the most distinguished of French Novelists, ALEXANDRE DUMAS. . . Belfast, March 1, 1846" (p. [5]). The Simms and M'Intyre translation was based on the original text of the novel as it first appeared in Le Journal des Débats. This is confirmed by the date of 24 February in the first line of the text (later revised to 28 February), and the spelling of Christo with an "h" throughout (this spelling was retained in the early Paris and Brussels editions, and was only changed to Cristo in the later first illustrated edition (Paris, Au Bureau de L'Écho Des Feuilletons, 1846)). A second English translation (the first illustrated English translation) of Monte Christo (The Count of Monte-Cristo [sic], London, Chapman & Hall, translator unknown) also appeared in 1846. This was based on a revised text of the novel, (most obviously identified by the date of 28 February in the first line, and the spelling of Cristo without an "h" throughout). The source text for the Chapman & Hall edition was possibly the first illustrated edition published in Paris. According to Munro and Sadleir, the Chapman & Hall edition appeared after the first part of the Simms and M'Intyre edition, Parlour Novelist vol. 3, and probably just before Parlour Novelist vols. 8 and 9. "Although Parlour Novelist Nos. 8 and 9 in all likelihood post-dated the Chapman and Hall edition, No. 3 pre-dated i . . . (FULL DESCRIPTION ON REQUEST). Seller Inventory # NM00060

About this Item: London: Methuen, [1904], 1904. Octavo, pp. 8 [advertisements]; 115. In publisher's decorated wraps, white card overprinted in red and black. Front of book features stylised titles and author's name bordered by a sword design, with central image of the 'wolf-leader' surrounded by a pack of ferocious wolves. Book is in extremely good condition, with very light edgewear, an ink number to left extremity of front panel and superficial chips to the spine panel. Clean, crisp and bright with border colours vivid around the striking Frank Adams cover illustration. Internally crisp and clean, with the customary reams of advertisements for Whelpton's Purifying Pills and Swan Fountain Pens preceding the story. Described as 'One of the best Werewolf novels ever written', this is a chilling tale of a man who gains the ability to control wolves after begging for assistance in his revenge against a persecutor, from a giant talking wolf walking on its hind legs. This extremely fragile item is in near-fine condition, making a rare survival. Dumas' novel is superb, teeming with rich Gothic description, humour, and provocative sentiment; 'And as we travel nearer and nearer to the grave, do we again draw closer, ever closer to the cradle?'. About this Item: Paris, Ancienne Maison Quantin, 1892. Couverture souple. About this Item: Paris, Librairie Nouvelle, 1855. In-16, broché, couverture imprimée (dos cassé), 96 p. (qqs rouss.). Edition originale. (Clouzot, p. 104. Munro, n° 283. Parran, p. 64). Très rare. Seulement 4 exemplaires dans les bibliothèques françaises. Seller Inventory # 36223
