About this Item: 'Published every Month by Effingham Wilson Royal Exchange.' ?, 1834. One page. Dimensions of illustration roughly seven and a half inches by five and a half wide. A frail survival, aged and creased, but with illustration clear and complete. Glue stains from previous mounting on rear. Unusual and striking illustration, consisting of grotesque caricatures of two men - the first tall and thin and in tartan trousers, carrying the letter I, and the second a dwarf in riding boots and cap, carrying the letter T. In the black body of the two letters are picked out in white the words 'IS JUST OUT by ALFRED CROWQUIL [sic] | Price | 1 Shilg.' The periodical itself (IT) is almost as scarce as this advertisement: COPAC only gives a copy in the National Library of Scotland. The presence of tartan trousers implies a date several decades latter than that copy's tentative attribution to 1834. According to BBTI the radical bookseller Effingham Wilson and his son of the same name traded from 1807 to 1887. Seller Inventory # 4963

About this Item: London: s and 1850s, 1840. Ten of the engravings carry Crowquill's name; the other eight can be attributed to him stylistically. In good overall condition, on aged paper, with a few of the eighteen lightly creased or worn, and one bearing traces of previous mounting. Seven of the engravings are proofs of vignettes and initials, ranging in size from 10.5 cm square to 22 x 18.5 cm. Two of these are engraved by Lee, and one by Mason, and they include a cherub riding a lion; a seated fat woman addressed by a standing man, hat in hand; a seated man with a newspaper addressed by a young lady, while a man stands by, stick in hand; a juggler on a horse; a cat and three kittens seated beside a tree, which curls into the word 'PREFACE', and - probably the best item in the collection - a complex grouping of faces and figures, including an anthropomorphic Christmas pudding with knife and bottle in hand, anthropomorphic frogs and birds, circus tumblers, dancers, a fairy, and a grotesque Punch-like figure with bespectacled wife. Five more proofs are on pieces of paper each around 20.5 x 30 cm, engraved by 'PEARSON' from 'A. CROWQUILL, DEL.', and depicting eighteenth-century scenes, with ladies and gentlemen fine clothing; an old maid in a garden with dog and baby in cradle; a fight scene in a crowded street in front of a sedan chair; a priest standing by as a gentleman cries while leaning on a tree. The remaining six engravings include three of the original portraits (George Cruikshank, Allan Cunningham, William Roscoe) that accompanied William Maginn's 'Gallery of Illustrious Literary Characters', all 'Published by James Fraser, 245, Regent Street'; all three trimmed and worn, with the portrait of Roscoe with evidence of previous mounting; along with these is the portrait of Isaac D'Israeli, trimmed, taken from the publication of Maginn's essays in book form; an engraving of a giant's hand lowering a tiny soldier into a well; and an engraving of a cobra hovering over a sleeping man. About this Item: Printed by J. E. Adlard (not published), London, 1868. Decorated Cloth. Condition: Near Fine. 8vo. 25 by 16 cm. 40 pp. A song lyric or two per page, most accompanied by a whimsical vignette (and occasionally two) by Alfred Crowquill, a pseudonym for Alfred Henry Forrester, who also wrote a few of the lyrics. Some of the vignettes depict blacks, in varying degrees of prevailing stereotypes, while others are a mix of Victorian figures such as fairies, young lovers, etc. The text and illustrations are within red borders. The Christy Minstrel were perhaps the best known black face troupe of the time, formed originally in 1843. The troupe was credited with creating the standard three act format of a minstrel show and introducing standard characters such as Mr. Tambo and Mr. Bones. The founders of the troupe, George and Edwin Christy, retired in 1857, and when its performers continued to tour, the Christys took out an injunction to stop them. In 1857 Messrs. Raynor and Pierce re-constituted the group with many of its alumni in London, where minstrel performances were immensely popular. This troupe also dissolved, after which new Christy Minstrel groups sprouted everywhere, often trumpeting the employment of one or two of the performers from a prior group as their claim to fame. This particular troupe, though, claimed to be the only one touring the British Isles with any of the original members, and in fact asserted that it had "nearly all the most distinguished members" from it. Thus the "Veritable and Legitimate" phrase in the title of this program. Light wear to the boards. Seller Inventory # 003167

About this Item: None stated nd, None Stated. Hardcover. Dark green 3/4 leather with complementary medium green cloth. Gilt edging, lettering and 3 bands (not raised). AEG. No text. 20 pp, each with an individual bw etching / engraving. With bookplates by prominent people. The title page is hand-lettered, and there is no printed publication information. This is a unique and important item of Cruikshankiana. Ex-library copy with minimally offensive marks, given the importance of each one. This volume contains ONLY the 20 engravings used as illustrations for Eccentric Tales. The original sketches were by Alfred Henry Forrester (under the pseudonym of Alfred Crowquill). The actual book illustrations then were done by George Cruikshank. This particular book contains Forrester's personal book plate. Another book plate is of Albert M. Cohn who wrote a catalogue raisonne of Cruikshank's works in 1924 (a small label on the fep makes reference to this catalogue, #471). And a third book plate is of William Hartman Woodin, Secretary of the Treasury under Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1933. The final bookplate present is that of the Brooklyn Public Library. Plates No. 8 and 15 have remarques. The Cruikshank illustrations in Eccentric Tales were, apparently, hand-tinted, but these images are in b/w with no tinting, and appear to be etching proofs for the final illustrations. Both Crowquill's and Cruikshank's names appear under each etching. Delightful and humorous illustrations done in great detail. Unique and rare. Ex-library copy with usual marks. Plates mostly clean, but a few have minor-to-mild foxing. Two plates have perforation stamps on lower margins, not affecting plate images. Front end pages (ffep detached and laid in) contain 2 library plates, 2 personal book plates, and one additional plate. Some wear to spine, mostly at head/tail, and to leather corners, but nothing terribly offensive. Ex-lib. sticker on back cover. Seller Inventory # 149584

About this Item: London. Decorated Cloth. Condition: Near Fine. Original pen and ink and wash drawing of Olde English hamlet, snow and chidren, plus original verse by Crowquill. N.d., circa 1840s. 33 by 22 cm, and with matting, 51 by 41 cm. There are four staves without musical notation. Clearly the intention was to have a composer set Crowquill's words to music. Wonderful lyrics, with a powerfully evocative drawing on top, and the music staves and verses are laid over a backdrop of snowflakes and a gray brown that represents both the earth or the wintry sky.
