"32 pages of historical (b&w) illustrations.". world history. autobiography. biography. memoirs. history of france. history of germany. the dreyfus affair. anti~semitism. espionage. devil's island. ~ The Dreyfus Affair, which rocked France at the turn of the century, stands today as a timely lesson in morality which we in the civilized world cannot afford to bury in the pages of history. Truly a literary find, the diary of Captain Dreyfus has been out of print since 1901 and appears here in its complete, original form. In his own words, Dreyfus tells of his experiences from the time of his arrest, his years on Devil's Island, and his eventual vindication. Based on his own personal story, the book sheds much new light on this most infamous, emotional episode that tore France apart and shocked the world. In 1894 French intelligence intercepted a memorandum sent to the German embassy, presumably by a member of the French Army's General Staff. The only Jewish officer on the staff, Captain Dreyfus, had a handwriting similar to that in the memorandum. This information was leaked to the press, touching off a passionate anti~Jewish outcry, which surrounded the trial wherein Dreyfus was sentenced to deportation and lifelong degradation as a traitor. Violent antiSemitism was to characterize French public opinion for years and to antagonize eventual resolution of the Dreyfus case. Almost alone, the novelist Emile Zola spoke out in defense of Dreyfus and with his famous open letter "J'Accuse!" stemmed the tide of blind hysteria that had engulfed France. As the case developed, it became clear that not one but two stood accused: Dreyfus and French society. If Dreyfus was found innocent, the French people would be guilty ~ yet if the rights of one citizen were denied, the rights of all were in jeopardy. Ultimately, Dreyfus was exonerated and the case that began behind a smokescreen of fraud and prejudice finally represented a victory for truth and justice. This edition carries an introduction by the well~known Dreyfus scholar, Nicholas Halasz. It includes photographs of all the principals in the case, exclusive reproductions of the antiSemitic newspapers and magazines of the time in France, and highlights from Zola's famous "J'Accuse!".
