About this Item: London - Edward Moxon and Co., 1867. Hardcover. Condition: VERY GOOD. This work collects Alfred Tennyson's poem about the seduction of Merlin by Vivien and his eventual betrayal and imprisonment by her. One of a series of poems by Tennyson, based on the legend of King Arthur and his court. In this work, the writer adapts the tale of the fall of Merlin. Vivien hadboasted to King Mark of Cornwall that she would return to him with the hearts of Arthur's knights. She has failed to seduce Arthur, and as the poem begins she has commenced her second plan, which is to instead use her charms upon Merlin. In the forest of Broceliande the two sit by a hollow oak, and Vivien asks Merlin to teach her a spell whichcouldtrap a man. He does not trust her. She professes her love for him and tells him that he cannot love her if he doubts her. Eventually worn down, the Magician teaches her the spell, which is used upon him as soon as he falls asleep, imprisoning him forever in the tree. With nine beautiful plates by Gustave Dore with tissue guards, including one opposite the title page. Gilt fore-edge. Condition: Ina cloth binding. Externally: Has suffered rubbing to cover and edges. Bumping to corners and spine, with some fraying. Internally: Hinges tender. Pages loosening in places, though otherwise firm. Pages bright with some light foxing; light spill-mark to borders of plates. Tissue guard for plate opposite title-page has a small tear. Overall: VERY GOOD. Seller Inventory # 048750
