About this Item: Victor Gollancz Ltd, London, 1962. Octavo, boards. First British (and first hardcover) edition. "An American scientist is badly injured in an explosion, then 'repaired' by Soviet doctors and returned to the USA. The problem is that he is now virtually a cyborg and no one can be sure of his identity. A clever cold-war thriller which established this young writer's reputation." - Pringle, The Ultimate Guide to Science Fiction, second edition (1995), p. 419. "A strong indictment of the idiocies dignified at that time (and to a great extent still today) as 'security,' but a parable also of estrangement and alienation more generally." - Anatomy of Wonder (2004) II-183. "Perhaps as fine a study of dehumanization and alienation as SF will ever produce." - Gene Wolfe. 1959 Hugo nominee. Filmed in 1973 with Elliott Gould and Trevor Howard, it is faithful to the concept of the novel. Retitled for the video release as Roboman, apparently to cash in on the Robocop craze. Survey of Science Fiction Literature V, pp. 2474-77. A fine copy in fine dust jacket. Formerly, a Gollancz file copy with "file copy" written in green ink on front panel of the jacket. A very scarce book. (#89175). Seller Inventory # 89175

About this Item: Holyoke, MA: Columbia Publications, Inc. 1st Editions 1953, 1954, 1955, 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959 & 1960, 1960. Soft Cover. Condition: Very Good. Ed Emshwiller, Frank Kelly Freas, Paul Orban, Alex Schomberg, Others (front covers) (illustrator). First Edition. ----------This heavy set will require NO additional shipping charges for a US or Canadian order, overseas orders will require a shipping charge DRAMATICALLY LESS than actual postage (inquire). Science fiction pulp magazines, digest size, 38 issues in all. Science Fiction had been standard pulp size from its' start in 1939, to 1943, when it was discontinued. None of those 1939-1943 issues are included in this offering. In 1953 and 1954, 2 digest size test issues were published, then in January 1955 regular publication began, and ran until May, 1960. Offered here is the COMPLETE set of the digest size 2 test issues (1953 & 1954), and the subsequent 36 regular publication issues (1955-1960), to a total of 38 volumes in digest size. Of some interest is the fact that the official title of this magazine is "Science Fiction Stories". The prefix "The Original" was a descriptive blurb added in September 1955 to indicate that this was the first magazine to be titled "Science Fiction" way back in the pulp days of 1939. In any event, this is the complete 38-volume set of the digest size Science Fiction Stories or The Original Science Fiction Stories, call it what you will. Many of the major writers of the period appeared in Science Fiction Stories, including Philip K. Dick (3 stories), Isaac Asimov (2 stories), Robert Silverberg (at least 17 stories under his own name and pseudonyms), Algis Budrys (6 stories), Clifford Simak (3 stories), many others. Some notable stories are The Tower of Zanid by L. Sprague de Camp, Caduceus Wild by Ward Moore, and R.A. Lafferty's very first story, Day of the Glacier. Some issues have creases, small tears, chips, spine damage, staining, pen on cover. Condition ranges from fair to near fine, with most being at least VG. Seller Inventory # 012496

About this Item: This document is of particular interest for its outline, giving a glimpse into the planning process of a significant writer. It does of course diverge from the final published book. This novel (F&SF October/November 1992; Warner Books, 1993), the first Budrys had published in fifteen years, and a Nebula nominee, tells of the five members of a downed UFO, alien but humanoid in appearance and only slightly advanced technologically over us, as they try to blend into their new environment and survive. ". short but densely compact . The tale, complexly told, conveys a hard dry mature melancholy irony" (SFE online). Budrys was one of the post-World War II writers of SF who sought to bring literary heft and polish to the genre. Fine condition throughout. (#104873). Seller Inventory # 104873
