Item Description: Victor Gollancz Ltd, London, 1962. Octavo, boards. First British (and first hardcover) edition. "An American scientist is badly injured in an explosion, then 'repaired' by Soviet doctors and returned to the USA. The problem is that he is now virtually a cyborg and no one can be sure of his identity. A clever cold-war thriller which established this young writer's reputation." - Pringle, The Ultimate Guide to Science Fiction, second edition (1995), p. 419. "A strong indictment of the idiocies dignified at that time (and to a great extent still today) as 'security,' but a parable also of estrangement and alienation more generally." - Anatomy of Wonder (2004) II-183. "Perhaps as fine a study of dehumanization and alienation as SF will ever produce." - Gene Wolfe. 1959 Hugo nominee. Filmed in 1973 with Elliott Gould and Trevor Howard, it is faithful to the concept of the novel. Retitled for the video release as Roboman, apparently to cash in on the Robocop craze. Survey of Science Fiction Literature V, pp. 2474-77. A fine copy in fine dust jacket. Formerly, a Gollancz file copy with "file copy" written in green ink on front panel of the jacket. A very scarce book. (#89175). Bookseller Inventory # 89175

Item Description: This document is of particular interest for its outline, giving a glimpse into the planning process of a significant writer. It does of course diverge from the final published book. This novel (F&SF October/November 1992; Warner Books, 1993), the first Budrys had published in fifteen years, and a Nebula nominee, tells of the five members of a downed UFO, alien but humanoid in appearance and only slightly advanced technologically over us, as they try to blend into their new environment and survive. ". short but densely compact . The tale, complexly told, conveys a hard dry mature melancholy irony" (SFE online). Budrys was one of the post-World War II writers of SF who sought to bring literary heft and polish to the genre. Fine condition throughout. (#104873). Bookseller Inventory # 104873

Item Description: Ronald L. Smith, New York, 1955. Stapled Wraps. Book Condition: Near Fine. Ralph Rayburn Phillips, Lin Carter, Cindy (Smith), Paul Powlesland (illustrator). First Edition. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. New York: Ronald L. Smith, 1955. First edition. July, 1955 / issue number 10 under the name Inside and Science Fiction Advertiser (which is the last name for the famed sci-fi / fantasy fanzine, which was also published under the earlier names "Fantasy Advertiser" and "Science Fiction Advertiser", though the primary focus was always Science Fiction). Ron Smith became the Editor/Publisher with the November, 1954 issue, which was also the first under this name. Octavo, stapled illustrated wraps, 46 pp. About Near Fine; thin peripheral toning, light crease top right front cover (see scans). This July / 1955 issue was published as Ron Smith was in the process of improving the fanzine, which had been erratic in quality in prior years; 1956, yet to come, would be perhaps the best year. This "Lovecraft-isms" issue has plenty inside to enjoy; Cindy (Smith), Ralph Phillips (front cover depicting Abdul Al hazred the Mad Arab, rear cover depicting Eleazar Durfee), and Paul Powlesland; articles and reviews by Lin Carter, Joe Schaumburger, Clyde Beck, Howard Browne, Joe Gibson, Martin Jukovsky, George H. Smith, Algis Budrys, and Ron Smith editorials. See scan of contents page. A rarity, for the collector. l-pr1. Bookseller Inventory # 005583
