About this Item: On letterhead of 'His Highness The Nizam's Government | Hyderabad Deccan' 15 March, 1892. 3pp., 4to. Bifolium. In fair condition, on lightly aged paper, with traces of grey paper mount adhering to the blank reverse of the second leaf. The letter is signed 'Osman. Jah.', but in the whole letter only the word 'Osman.' and its underlining flourish, would appear to be in the future Nizam's handwriting, the rest having been written by an amanuensis. The book which is the subject of the letter is presumably Rees's 'Lord Connemara's Tours in India, 1886-1890', which had appeared earlier in 1892. The future Nizam writes: 'I have read your invaluable work with great pleasure and interest, and I offer you my hearty congratulations on the further success that you have achieved in the field of literature, a success which by your exceptional abilities and great attainments you eminently deserve.' The 'Chapters on Hyderabad' held 'a special interest' for him, and 'His Highness [his father the Nizam Mahbub Ali Khan, Asaf Jah VI (1866-1911)] has also been highly pleased with the book, and he has commanded me to be kindly remembered to you.' He continues with news of 'Mrs. Plowden' and her daughters and niece, 'nice and charming people' who are going to Ootacumund later in the month', while he and his father will not be able 'to visit Ooty this year [.] It is most kind of you to offer to do anything I may want done at Ooty, and I shall not fail to avail myself of your kind offer when I may need it'. He hopes Rees and his wife will soon visit Hyderabad: 'I trust you will stay at Basheer Bagh'. He ends with regards to Rees's wife and 'His Excellency Sir James Dormer'. In 1937 TIme magazine, in placing a picture of him on their cover, dubbed Osman the richest man in the world. Seller Inventory # 20084
