Publisher's full green cloth, gilt (white) lettering and decoration on spine, gilt (white) lettering and hour-glass decoration with blind-stamped wreath medallion on cover. 12mo. Modest shelf-wear at head and heel of spine and corners, front hinge starting, tight and square. VERY GOOD. In the 1890s, one of the most well-known popular magazine contributors signed her stories and essays Octave Thanet, the pseudonym used by Alice French. Alice French (1850 - 1934), better known as Octave Thanet, was an American novelist. She was born at Andover, Massachusetts, a daughter of George Henry and Frances Wood French, and began her literary career about 1878 with studies of a social and economic bent, but soon turned to short stories, especially after her removal to the West. Iowa and Arkansas gave her opportunities for exploiting regions hitherto little attempted in fiction. French's mother, Frances, was the daughter of Massachusetts Governor Marcus Morton. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Seller Inventory # 5837

About this Item: Harper & Brothers, 1868. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Single volume--six issues bound without covers and advertisements. Small quarto, 9 3/4" tall, 824 pages, three-quarter leather over black cloth. A very good hard cover with general shelf wear, boards scuffed at the bottom edges and the top and bottom leather edges of the back strip, fore-corner tips worn through to boards, hinges cracked but secure and internal binding solid, paper lightly yellowed with some light scattered foxing. This is the publisher's edition, printed from the original plates and includes all of the editorial material (articles, stories, poetry, etc.) of the separate issues but lacks the advertisements and individual covers. It was the practice of the time for most of the better literary magazines to issue such editions before melting down the original printers' plates. Note: ''Harper's Magazine' began publication in 1850 and recreated the American magazine, serving as a promotional vehicle for Harper and Brothers books as well as the new 'literary' fiction and essay of the time, using sophisticated illustration and the best authors. Subject matters range from art, fiction, and poetry to history and science. As such it makes a terrific read as an anthology of its moment in time. An excellent resource Three-quarter leather over cloth. Seller Inventory # 20481
