About this Item: Speaking Tiger Publishing, 2017. Soft cover. Condition: New. 1st Edition. ‘He was living once more in those far-away days that had begun with such happiness, only to end in such failure and pain [ ] and now a result had arisen, alive and awful and tragic—the woman in the bazaar!’ On leave in England from his regimental duties in British India, Captain George Coventry falls in love with the vicar’s daughter, Rafella Forte. After a brief courtship they marry and move to India. Rafella is a devoted wife and George is glad to have her for a partner, but when she strikes up a friendship with Mr Kennard, a handsome barrister, George assumes the worst. In a fit of jealous rage, he terrorizes his young wife and she escapes into the night, never to be seen again. Years later, when he is given another chance at love with the young, outgoing beauty Trixie Munro, George must face down his dark past. He must also contend with the ‘woman in the bazaar’—an increasingly persistent and bloodcurdling rumour of an Englishwoman sold into slavery—a horror he fears he might have wrought on his first wife. A compelling portrait of marriage and jealousy written in fluid prose, The Woman in the Bazaar is compulsively readable and one of the finest novels of the Raj era. Once a popular writer with many bestsellers to her credit, Alice Perrin is now being rediscovered for her memorable yarns of British life in India. (jacket). Seller Inventory # 123823

About this Item: Speaking Tiger, 2017. Soft cover. Condition: New. 1st Edition. Stella Carrington, young and beautiful, feels that life is passing her by in the repressed Victorian household of her grandmother and spinster aunts. A casual flirtation shocks and horrifies the elderly ladies, and they summon Robert Crayfield, her godfather, who is an officer in the Indian Civil Service, to make suitable arrangements for her to be a missionary or governess. But, tantalized by her beauty and disregarding the difference in their ages, he offers to marry her instead, scandalizing the village. Stella, indifferent to romance, is most excited by the prospect of going to India that her marriage offers. Once there, she is enthralled at the beauty and mystery of the subcontinent, but increasingly disenchanted by her husband, who is only interested in her as a whet to his sensual appetites. When the young, handsome Philip Flint is posted as a junior officer in the same town, for the first time, she is forced to consider her own desires and duties. Alice Perrin writes of Anglo-Indian life during the Raj era with great detail and sympathy, drawing compelling characters who love and despair, feel jealousy and doubt. Once a popular writer with many bestsellers to her credit, she is now being rediscovered for her memorable romances and ghost stories set in India at the turn of the twentieth century. (jacket). About this Item: Desmond Fitzgerald, New York, 1910. Hardback. Condition: Good. First Edition. Perrin, Alice. The Charm. New York: Desmond Fitzgerald, Inc. Publishers, n.d. [1910]. First edition, U.S. issue. Made up from sheets printed in Scotland for Methuen, with new title and half-title leaves forming a separate gathering of two leaves. Octavo, pp. [1-4] [1] 2-315 [316: printer's imprint]. Original dark green cloth, front panel stamped in gold and ruled in blind, spine panel stamped in gold. Some wear to cloth at spine ends and corner tips, small damp stain at base of spine, closed tear to bottom right corner of one leaf, else a very good copy. #850. $65. Novel set in India by a writer who was intimately and sympathetically acquainted with the country, one of the half dozen most prolific and important interpreters of the Indian experience for English-language readers. This story is a tragic study of the perilous yet inevitable mingling of British and Indian racial strains. The supernatural, though muted and ambiguous, provides an important part of the background. A low-level English government official, new to the country, is thrown together by circumstance with a beautiful young widowed Eurasian woman and her young son. He is naïve and rather weak. She is unthinking and rather selfish. In the isolation of their part of the country, they are drawn to each other. The heroine, aspiring to an untainted English identity, is kept in mind of her other heritage by her baleful old grandmother, Bibi, who views an alliance between the girl and the Englishman with cynical approval. The other character most representative of the dark side of the native culture is the old "devil-priest" who peddles charms. A love charm which Bibi gives her granddaughter for use on her new English husband, provides the catalyst for the tragic conclusion of the story. Told skillfully with close attention to physical and psychological detail. While certainly not in the same league with, say, A Passage to India, this is definitely a cut above most popular fiction of the day. This edition id quite uncommon, as is the UK first edition. Five U.S. libraries have later printings of the UK edition; only one (NYPL) holds this Desmond edition. Gupta, India in English Fiction, 1800-1970, #1591. Not noted in usual fantasy checklists. Like most of her work it is set in India, detailing the trials and tribulations of the servants of the Raj. Publisher's tan cloth lettered in blind and gilt. Surface rubbing to extremities and lacking half-title page, but a good, sound copy of a fragile and elusive war-time production. Seller Inventory # 4952

About this Item: London Anthony Treherne & Co Limited 1901, 1901. First edition. The book is reasonably firmly bound in the publisher's brown and green cloth, lettered in white, there are tears to the cloth, also creasing, rubbing, bumping and minor marks. The text block is toned and slightly foxed, with cracking at points, a bookplate to the front pastedown proclaiming the book to have once been the property W. H. Smith's Circulating Library and a neatly written name in pencil to the front endpaper. A superb collection of Anglo-Indian short stories, Perrin's first and generally considered her best, rivalling Rudyard Kipling's, they are tales laced with elements of horror and the supernatural. About this Item: Treherne, London, 1901. Hardcover. Condition: Good. First Edition. Rare first edition of Alice Perrin's first, best and most famous collection of ghostly, spooky tales with Indian themes [Gupta 1592, Bleiler p.221]. In original russet cloth with lettering and decoration in green and white. Neat, professional repairs to snags at head and tail of spine; slight marginal grubbiness passim. Overall a good or better copy of a book that is hardly ever encountered, probably from a print run of no more than 1000 copies. Alice Perrin's work was neglected for over 70 years after her death but she is now being reevaluated and seen as a key figure in female writing about India - and a mistress of the macabre.
