About this Item: Adam & Charles Black, London, 1903. Decorative Cloth. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Helen Allingham (illustrator). Limited Edition of 750 Copies. De Luxe Limited Edition Number 369 of 750 copies signed by the artist. Bound in original cream coloured cloth over bevelled boards decorated with pink roses and rose buds in pink and green, gilt titling on spine and front board and green decorative rules on spine and front board. Top edge gilt. 204 pages, colour frontispiece and 80 other colour plates, protected by tissue guards. Slightly bumped and nicked at head of spine and also somewhat bumped at bottom of spine. The texture of the cloth on the spine has become a little rough in places and the title and decoration has slightly faded. The corners of the covers are bumped and a bit frayed and on the bottom edges the cloth on the corners has worn away revealing a bit of the board. There are some general signs of wear on the front and rear covers but overall the binding remains handsome and bright. The endpapers are rather foxed but the text and plates are clean with the exception of the penultimate page which is a little spotted. The endpapers have slightly split revealing a bit of the inner hinges, more so at the back, but the overall appearance of the endpapers is not unduly spoilt by this. The page edges have become slightly darkened.Despite detailed points noted, this example of the scarce limited edition remains in very good condition for its age. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Signed by Illustrator. Limited Edition. Seller Inventory # 000667

About this Item: London: Reeves & Turner, 1887. Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. First edition, first issue, 17.5 x 11cm (8vo), in publisher's forest green fine rib-grain cloth w/embossed central device to fr. cover, embossed borders to covers, gilt title to spine, a.e. untrimmed, marbled ep.s, [i-v] vi, [1] 2-164 pp. Printed by Billing & Sons, Guildford. Inscribed to head of half-title: "To Margaret Jameson from W. Allingham" & w/his holograph correction to p.105 (the recipient was likely the illustrator of the ca.1910 ed. of Goldsmith's "Vicar of Wakefield"). In Nov. 1887 Allingham noted in his diary: "trying to get 'Irish Songs', etc. out. Binding not right, mistake in printing" ("WA: A Diary" 1907, p.366)--the "not right" comment may refer to the marbled ep.s, highly unusual in a publisher's cloth binding; & the "mistake" is likely the repeat of the word "wondrous" on p.105. Binding Very Good (extremities sl. bumped & rubbed, & fore-edges of covers sl. discoloured); contents Good (most leaves a bit browned, & old glue stains to gutters of pp.48-49, 64-65, 112-13 & 128-29). Fredeman 46.13, Colbeck 30 (the 1890 2nd issue), Lasner 25. Inscribed by Author(s). Seller Inventory # 1181
