About this Item: Vienna, Hölder, 1907-1908., 1908. 4to. 3 in 4 vols. With 2 folding maps and one folding panorama. Numerous illustrations and plans. Original wrappers. First edition of this standard work on the region: the first scientific account of the Nabataean antiquities, including the ruins of Petra. The Bohemian scholar Alois Musil (1868-1944) was fluent in 35 Arabic dialects. In 1898 he had rediscovered the lost desert castle of Qusayr Amra (built c. 715 A.D.) in the Jordanian desert north of Amman. During WWI he was sent to the Middle East to thwart British operations against the Ottoman Empire, thus becoming the opponent of T. E. Lawrence. In 1827 he helped establish the Oriental Institute of the Academy of Sciences in Prague. - With contemp. ownership "Dr. Zweig" on wrapper covers (in Hebrew and German). Juni 1868 in Rychta¿ov, Mähren; ¿ 12. April 1944 in Otryby, Protektorat Böhmen und Mähren) war ein österreichisch-tschechischer Orientalist, Theologe und Geograph. Während des Ersten Weltkrieges wurde er zeitweilig zum Gegenspieler von T. E. Lawrence (Lawrence von Arabien). Musil unternahm nach 1895 eine Reihe ausgedehnter Forschungsreisen durch Arabien und das Heilige Land. Sein Kartenwerk Arabia Petraea, 1907 veröffentlicht, bildete eine erste wissenschaftliche Bestandsaufnahme der nabatäischen Altertümer, unter anderem der Ruinen von Petra. Später veröffentlichte er ein monumentales Werk über Qusair 'Amra und andere Umayyaden-Schlösser. Von 1898 bis 1935 war Musil, der Schriften in tschechischer, deutscher und arabischer Sprache veröffentlichte, als Professor an verschiedenen Hochschulen in Olmütz, Wien und Prag tätig. Published 1907-1908. The Austria-Czech orientalist, theologian and geographer Alois Musil (1868-1944) from 1896 to 1902 took several research trips through Arabia and the Holy Land. His maps Petraea Arabia, published in 1907, were the first scientific inventory of the Nabatean antiquities, including the ruins of Petra. The first volume deals in Moab, the fourth the ethnological results. The second volume covers the territory of the ancient kingdom of Edom, which was east of the southern part of the Jordan valley, the Wadi Araba between the northern Moab (Wadi Hesa limit) and the south of Seir (Seirgebirge) and which now belongs to Jordan. Musil (1868-1944) was a Czech explorer, orientalist, and writer. In the years 1887-1891 he studied at the Theological faculty of Olomouc, and was consecrated a priest in 1891. He received his doctorate in theology in 1895. In the years 1895 to 1898, he studied at the Dominican Bible School in Jerusalem, and at the Jesuit University of St. Joseph in Beirut. He traveled extensively throughout the Arab world and kept coming back to it until 1917, collecting a huge body of scientific material. During World War I, he was sent to the Middle East to mitigate British attempts to instigate a revolution against Turkey, thus making him an opponent of T. E. Lawrence. After the war he became a professor at Charles University in Prague. In cooperation with the American industrialist Charles Richard Crane, he published his works in English (see Wikipedia). This copy with the signature on the front endpaper of the scholar and Arab Studies professor, Dr. Louise Sweet. A few of her pencilled notations to the contents. This is a heavy book, the text printed on coated paper. Rubbing to board edges and light general soiling to cloth. A good plus copy. Bound in the original grey cloth. Seller Inventory # 037997
