Soft cover. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. Cover art by Edward Gorey (illustrator). Viking Compass Edition of Kingsley Amis' Lucky Jim, published by The Viking Press, New York, originally issued in this format in 1958, with this copy from the eighteenth printing dated March 1968. The novel is a landmark of postwar British satire, following the misadventures of Jim Dixon, a junior lecturer navigating academic pretension, social awkwardness, and class tensions with biting humor. The enduring popularity of the novel made it a staple of mid-century paperback circulation, particularly in the widely distributed Viking Compass series. This copy features the distinctive Edward Gorey cover design, a notable point of interest for collectors of illustrated paperbacks and Gorey ephemera. The book retains its original $1.45 cover price and Compass series designation (C35). Interior pages are complete and legible, with moderate toning and scattered staining consistent with age. A previous owner name (Steve Buccieri) appears in ink on the front endpaper. The text block remains intact and readable throughout. Condition is Fair. The covers show heavy wear, including creasing, edge chipping, rubbing, and visible staining, particularly along the top edge and spine. The spine is worn with stress lines but remains intact. Interior pages exhibit age toning and some water staining, most noticeable at the margins, though text is unaffected. Binding is still holding, but this is a well-used reading copy rather than a collector-grade example. Printed in the U.S.A. by Colonial Press Inc. While later printings are common, copies with Edward Gorey cover art maintain steady interest, especially among collectors of mid-century design and literary paperbacks. Kingsley Amis (1922-1995) was a prominent English novelist, poet, and critic, best known for his sharp wit and satirical portrayals of British society. Lucky Jim, his debut novel, brought him immediate acclaim and remains his most celebrated work, often cited as a defining example of the 'Angry Young Men' movement in postwar literature. Over his career, Amis wrote extensively across genres, including criticism, science fiction, and even James Bond pastiche, cementing his reputation as one of the leading literary voices of his generation. Edward Gorey (1925-2000) was an American writer and artist best known for his distinctive pen-and-ink illustrations combining Victorian and Edwardian settings with dark, whimsical, and often macabre humor. A prolific creator, he wrote and illustrated more than 100 books, including The Gashlycrumb Tinies and The Doubtful Guest, developing a cult following for his eccentric, gothic style. Gorey also gained broader recognition for his set and costume design for the Broadway production of Dracula (1977), which earned him a Tony Award. He spent much of his later life in Cape Cod, where his home - now the Edward Gorey House museum - reflects his unique artistic vision and enduring influence.

Condition: Very good. No jacket. First edition. First edition. 8vo. 59pp. Publisher's pale blue wraps printed in red. No jacket is called for. Introduction by the editors, Amis and Michie, who both contribute poems. Very Good in somewhat stained and unevenly faded wrappers. Rare. Amis and Michie got to know each other as undergraduates in Oxford and quickly established a weekly routine of meeting outside the Radcliffe Camera to dissect each other's poems: "During what cannot have been more than five or six weeks I produced about the same number of poems . . . about half my average yearly output over my poetry-writing life. James produced about as many. Nothing like it has happened to me before or since." With characteristic youthful insouciance, they then turned up at Blackwell's bookshop and asked to be made co-editors of the 1949 issue - a wish that was granted. Contributors here include Elizabeth Jennings and John Bayley (later Warton Professor of English at Oxford and husband to novelist and philosopher Iris Murdoch), who contributes three poems under the name Oliver Bayley.
