A leading member of the Birmingham Group of Artist-Craftsmen, Gaskin impressed William Morris with this work: the illustrations are "beyond doubt the most important volumes in any way connected with the school. Morris ranked them so highly that Mr. Gaskin was commissioned to design illustrations for some of the Kelmscott Press books" (White, p. 57). Original green cloth, spines lettered in gilt, decorated panels to front covers in green, green floral endpapers, top edges gilt. Frontispieces and illustrations in text by Arthur J. Gaskin. Vol. II with small bookseller's ticket on front pastedown and gift inscription dated 1894 on half-title; ownership inscription dated 1967 to front free endpaper of vol. I. A touch of wear to spine ends and a couple of corners bumped, faint foxing to endpapers, edges, and occasionally to contents, otherwise clean. A very good set.

Gift inscriptions from 1893 and 1949 to front pastedown of volume I and ownership signatures to pastedown of volume II. Offsetting and foxing to preliminary and terminal leaves, else fresh. A compilation of some of Hans Christian Andersen's most beloved fairy tales, including The Little Mermaid, The Emperor's New Suit, Thumbelina, and The Princess and the Pea. A large paper edition with ornate period illustrations throughout.

Title and illustration in gilt on the front covers of both volumes, and square illustration in gilt on the back. Title also in gilt on spine. Some browning to spines and edges of covers, and minor browning and foxing to endpapers and first few pages of both volumes. Minor offsetting from woodblock title pages in both volumes. Stain on the back cover of v.2. V.1 has inscription `Henry C. Carter, June 21, 1900` as well as original order form for Hans Christian Andersen`s Stories and Fairy Tales.
