A "The Living Library" book. Book is tight, square, and unmarked. Book Condition: Good +; light bumping to head, tail, and tips; light sunfading to spine; light shelfwear to head, tail, and tips. No DJ. Red cloth boards and spine with bright gilt lettering on the spine in a black shadowbox; Roxana picture on front board. Tanish endpapers. Tinted textblock top. Clean interiors. Internal hinges are sound and not split. 318 pp 8vo. This book was written in 1724 and was Defoe's last novel and his darkest one. It is the autobiography of a woman who has traded her virtue, at first for survival, and then for fame and fortune. The narrator tells the story of her own 'wicked' life as the mistress of rich and powerful men. A resourceful adventuress, she is also an unforgiving analyst of her own susceptibilities, who tells us of the price she pays for her successes. Endowed with many seductive skills, she is herself seduced: by money, by dreams of rank, and by the illusion that she can escape her own past. Unlike Defoe's other penitent anti-heroes, however, she fails to triumph over these weaknesses. The novel's drama lies not only in the heroine's 'vast variety of fortunes', but in her attempts to understand the sometimes bitter lessons of her life as a 'Fortunate Mistress'. Defoe's achievement was to invent, in 'Roxana', a gripping story-teller as well as a gripping story. Engaging pen and ink illustrations. A clean very presentable copy.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. No Jacket. Roxana, or The Fortunate Mistress by Daniel Defoe is a novel that tells the story of Roxana, a woman who begins life in poverty but rises to wealth and power through a series of relationships, including with wealthy men. The novel is presented as Roxana's confession and recounts her transformation from a naïve young woman to a skilled manipulator who uses her beauty and intelligence to secure her financial security. Throughout the story, Roxana grapples with themes of morality, virtue, and the consequences of her actions. The book explores the complexities of love, desire, and self-interest, offering a critique of societal norms and the roles women were expected to play during the 17th and 18th centuries. Roxana is a provocative exploration of a woman's struggle for autonomy and survival in a patriarchal world.
