Book First Edition Signed
Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 256 pages. Published in 2003. The author's breakthrough account. One of the best books on collecting and art. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. Presents Richard Polsky's "I Bought Andy Warhol". The contemporary "icon of global desire". The title is an allusion to the cult film, "I Shot Andy Warhol" (1996). Richard Polsky has been an art dealer all his adult life. His book is about two things: His quest to own a Warhol and the impact the artist himself has had on the art market. Polsky set aside $100, 000 to acquire a decent Warhol, but over the years, the price kept going up, up, up, way beyond his means. The story of how he finally nabbed his Warhol (it's the one shown on the book's cover), which became the obsessive focus of his life, is self-deprecating and moving. Polsky also shares with the reader the secrets he learned along the way, the principal one being seemingly obvious: That the longer a collector holds on to a good piece, the more he will come out on top. If he is lucky, he will become rich beyond his wildest dreams. The highest price a Warhol has fetched at auction has long since surpassed $100 Million, an unbelievable sum for a still-debated artist. The smart collectors have been those who, despite facing personal setbacks, major cash flow problems, and irresistible offers, nevertheless hold on to their pieces when most reasonable people think they are crazy to do so. Collectors have always had one decisive advantage over dealers: Their goal is to hold on to (and enjoy) their art. Every dealer, no matter how huge, needs to sell in order to stay in business. Dealing is about buying and selling. Collecting is about finding and timing. Polsky cites many examples to prove his point (which, ironically, collectors themselves often forget). Warhol himself stands out as a classic case study. When he gave up his successful career as an advertising "creative", Warhol struggled at first to get his work as an artist accepted, and ended up taking whatever money was offered for his major pieces in order to survive. He sold his "Campbell's Soup Can" silkscreen multiples (there are 32 in all) in 1962 to a prescient (and nasty) collector for $1000. Adding insult to injury, it was paid to him in monthly installments of less than $100 over two years, resulting in lifetime enmity between artist and collector. The collector, banned permanently, held on to the set for thirty-four years before selling it to the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in 1996 for $15 Million, a remarkable profit on his $1000 investment. But what would "Campbell's Soup Can" fetch today in the event that it ever became available in the art market? $150 Million. An absolute "must-have" title for Andy Warhol and Richard Polsky collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in black pen on the title page by Richard Polsky. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a classic. This is one of few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Copies available online have very serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. One of the greatest artists of the 20th century. A fine copy. ISBN 0810942712. Signed by Author.

Soft cover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 50 pages. Published in 1976. Rare Interview Magazine, Burt Reynolds, Andy Warhol, and Victor Hugo collectible item. A vintage copy of the February 1976 Magazine Issue, signed and dated by Victor Hugo. After all these years, the copy is intact and complete, not a page missing. It is worth pointing that out because as published, the magazine was a tabloid mess in its early days, and should not be confused with the post-Warhol Era edition, when the magazine's astonishing commercial success allowed and funded it to become a full-fledged, mainstream magazine, with elegant covers and high-quality, pristine-white stock paper. But: As originally conceived and designed by Warhol, this is the Real Thing: Tabloid Newspaper format. Each "trashy" doublespread is folded/creased in the middle, laid down flat one on top of the other, and folded/creased again as a bunch to comprise the whole magazine. The Burt Reynolds Cover by Andy Warhol is a beauty. Interviews by various journalists with various Zeitgeist celebrities. Cheaply produced on newsprint stock paper in NYC to normal standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Interview Magazine's "Burt Reynolds February 1976" Issue. Realized and assembled with the participation of Victor Hugo, the designer/artist who was a full-fledged member of the Warhol Factory inner circle. Named (by his parents) after the great French novelist, Victor was gifted, artistically, physically, sexually, and socially. Warhol did a (now-legendary) silkscreen painting of him and photographed him extensively. Today, he is probably best-known in popular culture as the hustler/lover/partner/destroyer of Halston, courtesy of his leading role in the Amazon biopic of the great fashion designer, brilliantly imitated and portrayed by Ewan MacGregor. In other words, Victor Hugo was the Real Thing, too: A major minor figure of the American Zeigeist when it mattered, that is, at the peak of the American Century. An absolute "must-have" collectible, not just memorabilia, item for Interview Magazine, Burt Reynolds, Andy Warhol, and Victor Hugo collectors. This copy of the Interview Magazine February 1976 Issue is very boldly and beautifully signed and dated (in the year of publication) in black pen-marker on the Back Page by the artist: "Victor Hugo '76". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This Issue is now collectible. As far as we know, this is the only such signed and publication-year dated copy of the Issue available online and is intact and complete, not a page missing. Please note: As originally conceived and designed by Warhol, Interview was supposed to be a "trashy" tabloid magazine, to be consumed then discarded, not to be preserved or stored. This copy was because of Victor Hugo's signature. A rare signed copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with black-and-white and color photographic plates. A fine copy. One of the most beautiful photography books of our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. A brilliant production by Hatje Cantz: Oversize-volume format. White cloth boards with red titles embossed on cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Steve Schapiro. Text by Mathias Harder. The subjects are THE Who's Who of 20th century performing and visual arts. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Germany to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ, which features, in a photographic coup, David Bowie on the cover, and red gilt titles embossed on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Steve Schapiro's "Then And Now". A triumphant achievement. "The photographer behind countless now-classic portraits of rock stars, film stars, and politicians from the 1960's and 1970's, Schapiro has worked as a film set photographer on more than 200 Hollywood movies; designed several iconic film posters, notably 'Midnight Cowboy', 'Taxi Driver', and 'The Godfather'; and as documentary photographer, recorded the political tumult of the 1960's and 1970's, in photo-essays on drug addiction, the Civil Rights Movement, and Presidential campaigns. Looks back at Schapiro's half-century career, reproducing famous images alongside new and unseen work. Includes portraits of the stars as never-before-seen" (Publisher's blurb). They include indelible portraits of iconic figures such as: Woody Allen, David Bowie, Marlon Brando, Johnny Depp, Robert De Niro, Francis Ford Coppola, Jodie Foster, Aretha Franklin, Dustin Hoffmann, John Huston, Michael Jackson, Sophia Loren, Rene Magritte, Steve McQueen, Paul Newman, Jack Nicholson, (the very elusive) Roman Polanski, Otto Preminger, Robert Rauschenberg, Robert Redford, Diana Ross, Tina Turner, Andy Warhol, Orson Welles, and Frank Zappa, among others. Genuine celebrity is not just captured, it is certified for posterity, by Schapiro's camera. An absolute "must-have" title for Steve Schapiro collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed and inscribed in red pen-marker on the title page by the photographer: "A great friend with a great eye. Stay inspired! Best, Steve". It is followed by his signature at the bottom of the page: "Steve Schapiro". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. The red pen beautifully matches the book's red titles. The recipient, Paul Berlanga, who is named, is a Chicago-based photography expert and important artist-painter. This title is a late-modern photography classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed and inscribed copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Lengthy inscription by one of the contributors in the middle of the book - unclear who exactly wrote the note, but it is on the page of editor / writer / curator Peter Pakesch so presumed to be his, and is dedicated to two well known collectors. Next to this note it reads "ditto CW" which would stand for artist Christopher Wool. Appears that artist Christopher Wool has signed the names of Andy Warhol & Barnett Newman ("xx Barney"), evidenced by similarity in handwriting, as well as the aforementioned note which is indeed by the artists. One additional signature (or inscription) at upper margin of page, also unclear to whome it belongs. Uncommon book contrasting the work of Warhol, Christopher Wool, Barnett Newman, Bruce Conner, and Sharon Lockhart. Light shelfwear and scuffing to wraps. Signed by Author(s).

Handsomely bound in finely woven black cloth spine stamped brightly in gold; and in mustard paper-covered boards. A near fine copy, crisp and tight, virtually unread. In a complete, near fine, crisp dust jacket with the price of $17.95 at the top of the inside front flap. The front panel features a photo of Truman Capote in a fedora. A superb, collectible copy, signed and dated with an inscription by D.D. Ryan to herself. This copy has been ostensibly inscribed in black flair ink by Andy Warhol to D.D. Ryan across the front endpaper to the late D.D. Ryan of Harper's Bazaar Fashion Fame. However, the inscription is actually written in the hand of D.D. Ryan: "Love didi , Andy Warhol 87 (underscored) Victor Hugo." Didi had a penchant for inscribing books given to her by such luminaries as Andy Warhol, Stephen Sondheim and others to herself as if they were presentations "from them," as in this case. D.D. Ryan (Dorinda Dixon Ryan), was a fashion designer at Harper's Bazaar where she worked with Diana Vreeland and Richard Avedon. Included in Dorinda's circle of friends were: Truman Capote, Andy Warhol, Hilary Knight, Kay Thompson, and many others. D.D. was married to John Barry Ryan, III, and the couple is mentioned in Frewin's book "The Late Mrs. Dorothy Parker" on p.305 in a paragraph listing a gathering "of social notables." When Jack Dunphy met Truman Capote in 1948, Dunphy had written a well-received novel, John Fury, and was just getting over a painful divorce from McCracken. In 1950 the two writers settled in Taormina, Sicily, in a house where the author D. H. Lawrence had once lived. Ten years older than Capote, Dunphy was in many ways Capote's opposite, as solitary as Capote was exuberantly social. Though they drifted more and more apart in the later years, the couple stayed together until Capote's death. When Capote died in 1984, his will named Dunphy as the chief beneficiary. Eight years later, Dunphy died of cancer in New York, at age 77. Dunphy and Capote had separate houses in Sagaponack, New York. Following their deaths some of the money from their estates was donated to The Nature Conservancy, which used it to acquire nearby Crooked Pond on the Long Island Greenbelt between Sag Harbor, New York and Bridgehampton, New York and their mingled ashes were scattered by the pond where a marker commemorates them. Joanna Carson, the third wife of Johnny Carson, has maintained that she also has some of Capote's ashes (a claim Dunphy denied) which she had kept at her Bel Air, Los Angeles home in the house where Capote died. After the ashes in California were stolen and returned, she bought a crypt for Capote's ashes at Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery inBrentwood, California; although it is unclear if the ashes were ever deposited there.Capote dedicated his short story "One Christmas" to Jack's sister Gloria Dunphy. Dunphy was portrayed in the film Capote (2005) by Bruce Greenwood and in the film Infamous (2006) by John Benjamin Hickey.
