Item Description: New York City, NY: Harry N. Abrams, 2003. Hardcover. Book Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: As New. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 256 pages. Published in 2003. The author's breakthrough debut account/memoir. One of the single best books on Andy Warhol as the American artist most coveted by collectors, an "icon of global desire". The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Richard Polsky's "I Bought Andy Warhol". Recounts in the most engaging, riveting, and accessible manner the inner workings of the art world by one of its most active members. The title is a sly allusion to the cult classic film, "I Shot Andy Warhol" (1996). Richard Polsky has been a private art dealer most of his adult life and helped found the biggest website for contemporary art. Polsky's book is about two things: His all-consuming personal quest to own a Warhol and the lasting impact the artist has had on the art market, which continues undiminished to this day. Polsky set aside $100, 000 to own a decent Warhol but over the decades, the price just kept going up, way beyond his means. The story of how he finally nabbed his much-coveted Warhol, which became the focus of his life (it's the one shown on the book's cover), is candid, self-deprecating, and oddly touching. Polsky also shares with the reader/would-be collector the secrets he learned along the way, the principal one being the most banal and obvious one: That the longer a collector holds on to what he knows is a valuable piece, the more he will probably come out on top. If he is lucky, as canny collectors seem to be, he can become rich beyond his wildest dreams. The highest price a Warhol has fetched at auction has surpassed $100 Million, an incredible sum for a late-20th century artist, and the smart sellers have been collectors most people thought were crazy to hold on to their pieces for so long. Collectors have one decisive advantage over dealers: They can afford to hold on to their acquisitions. Every dealer, no matter how successful, needs to sell in order to stay in business. Dealing is about buying and selling. Collecting is about finding and timing. Polsky cites numerous examples to prove his point (which collectors themselves overlook again and again). Warhol himself stands out as perhaps the best example. When he gave up his successful career as a commercial/advertising artist, Warhol struggled to get his work as an artist accepted and took whatever money he could to survive. He sold his "Campbell's Soup Can" silkscreen multiple (there are 32 in all) in 1962 to a collector for $1000, which was paid to him in monthly installments of less than $100 over a period that lasted two years, resulting in lifetime enmity between artist and buyer. The collector held on to the set and finally sold it to the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in 1996 for $15 Million. What would "Campbell's Soup Can" be worth today in the unlikely event that it ever became available in the art market? The conservative estimate is between $100 and $150 Million. One of the best books on life, art, and collecting, this is a "must-have" title for Andy Warhol collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen on the title page by Richard Polsky. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is now collectible. This is one of very few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. Please note: Most copies avilable online have major flaws or are remainder-marked. A rare signed copy thus. One of the greatest artists of the 20th century. A flawless copy. Item Description: New York City, NY: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1988. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 275 pages. Published in 1988. The author's memoir. One of the best books on Andy Warhol, The Factory, and our time ever published. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only that sold out shortly after publication. It is a testament to both Warhol's and Ultra Violet's enduring fame that the book remains in print to this day. The book has a dazzling DJ design by George Corsillo, one of the very best DJ designs ever in the history of American publishing. It brilliantly replicates/mimics one of Warhol's silkscreen paintings. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Ultra Violet's "Famous For Fifteen Minutes: My Years With Andy Warhol". The compulsively readable (and invaluable) resource-memoir of the French socialite/heiress Isabelle Collin Dufresne, whom Andy Warhol renamed Ultra Violet and proclaimed as one of his Superstars. A committed lifelong lover and collector of art (and a beauty), she was stolen by Warhol from his older artist-rival, Salvador Dali. Her memoir is written entirely in the present tense, as if everything she remembers and recalls is happening and unfolding in real time before our eyes. It's not an easy feat to pull off, but she does. It is not a stunt either because Ultra Violet's point is that anyone who enjoys his or her fifteen minutes of fame must make every minute count, must make us feel its immediacy, as if it is happening right NOW, and must make it last like an eternity. In her and Warhol's case, fifteen minutes have now actually lasted more than fifty years, are still going strong, and will live on in art history. We live, and have lived for some time, in the Age of Entertainment and Celebrity. Warhol was not the first to imagine, prophesy, or realize this fact. But he was the first to embrace it wholeheartedly as a serious artist (whereas his Modernist predecessors rejected it), and make it fully his life-work. He created art - The Real Thing: ground-breaking, influential, and now very valuable - and lived his life as if he was the Number One Celebrity, THE Superstar and maker of other Superstars like Ultra Violet. An absolute "must-have" title for Andy Warhol and Ultra Violet collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed and dated (on the day of publication) in violet pen-marker on the title page by the author: "Ultra Violet Oct 22 88". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. Ultra Violet signed copies mainly through her publisher. This title is a classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed and publication-dated copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws yet command as much as $300. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with 16 pages of vintage photographs. One of the best accounts on the most important and most influential American artist of our time. A fine copy. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. A brilliant production by PowerHouse: Oversize-volume format. Red hard boards with white titles on cover and spine, as issued. Photographs with accompanying Captions by Jeannette Montgomery Barron. She is that rare bird: A photographer who is also a fine writer. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ, which features the young Willem Dafoe on the cover, and with red titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Jeannette Montgomery Barron's "Scene". The finest photographic album of a seminal artistic era: Portraits of the artists of the 1980's. While some of them (notably, Warhol) were already world-famous, many more were not, but were on the verge of their decisive, all-important breakthroughs. Barron also photographed some of their muses, lovers, and patrons. "A remarkable compendium of portraits of renowned personalities of the most exciting era of NYC underground culture, the 1980's. A veritable time capsule of NYC when the young and indomitable flocked downtown in search of places to work and live among like-minded collaborators. These musicians, filmmakers, painters, writers, fashion designers, publishers, actors, models, and photographers played together, worked together, and made their own rules, and changed our culture forever. Fragile young souls, fearless in their desire to remake the art world in their likeness, and a poignant memento of those lost too early" (Publisher's blurb). Aside from Warhol, the luminaries include Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Robert Mapplethorpe (all dead), Francesco Clemente, Julian Schnabel, Jenny Holzer, Cindy Sherman, Kathryn Bigelow (of "Hurt Locker" and "Zero Dark Thirty" fame), and William Burroughs. "We look so young. We were so young" (Rene Ricard). He should know. This is his second project on the whole Zeitgeist, the first one, David Armstrong's "Night And Day" (2012), being about the end of the Seventies and the beginning of the Eighties. There are no comparable photographs of the key figures of this artistic scene elsewhere: Intimate without being intrusive, affectionate without being maudlin, and indelible. An absolute "must-have" title for Jeannette Montgomery Barron and contemporary art collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen-marker on the title page by Jeannette Montgomery Barron. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. She launched the book in New York City during which event her signature was obtained. This title is a contemporary photography classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Item Description: Ostfildern, Germany: Hatje Cantz Publishers, 2012. Hardcover. Book Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: As New. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 220 pages. Published in 2012. Retrospective collection of portrait-photographs. One of the most beautiful photography books of our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. A brilliant production by Hatje Cantz: Oversize-volume format. White cloth boards with red titles embossed on cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Steve Schapiro. Text by Mathias Harder. The subjects are THE Who's Who of 20th century performing and visual arts. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Germany to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ, which features, in a photographic coup, David Bowie on the cover, and red gilt titles embossed on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Steve Schapiro's "Then And Now". "The photographer behind countless now-classic portraits of rock stars, film stars, and politicians from the 1960's and 1970's, Schapiro has worked as a film set photographer on more than 200 Hollywood movies; designed several iconic film posters, notably 'Midnight Cowboy', 'Taxi Driver', and 'The Godfather'; and as documentary photographer, recorded the political tumult of the 1960's and 1970's, in photo-essays on drug addiction, the Civil Rights Movement, and Presidential campaigns. Looks back at Schapiro's half-century career, reproducing famous images alongside new and unseen work. Includes portraits of the stars as never-before-seen" (Publisher's blurb). They include indelible portraits of iconic figures such as: Woody Allen, David Bowie, Marlon Brando, Johnny Depp, Robert De Niro, Francis Ford Coppola, Jodie Foster, Aretha Franklin, Dustin Hoffmann, John Huston, Michael Jackson, Sophia Loren, Rene Magritte, Steve McQueen, Paul Newman, Jack Nicholson, (the very elusive) Roman Polanski, Otto Preminger, Robert Rauschenberg, Robert Redford, Diana Ross, Tina Turner, Andy Warhol, Orson Welles, and Frank Zappa, among others. Genuine celebrity is not just captured, it is certified for posterity, by Schapiro's camera. An absolute "must-have" title for Steve Schapiro collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed and inscribed in red pen-marker on the title page by the photographer: "A great friend with a great eye. Stay inspired! Best, Steve". It is followed by his signature at the bottom of the page: "Steve Schapiro". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. The red pen beautifully matches the book's red titles. The recipient is named, who is a Chicago-based photography expert and important artist-painter. This title is a late-modern photography classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed and inscribed copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: All other signed copies available online are also from us. A rare signed copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with black-and-white plates. One of the finest American photographers of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER STEVE SCHAPIRO TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 3775734260. Signed by Author. Bookseller Inventory # 20277

His career as a photographer began there between 1964 and 1966, when he and Warhol made screen tests of 300 people. Later on, he [made captivating] portraits of Iggy Pop, Robert Mapplethorpe, Tennessee Williams, Alice Cooper, Mick Jagger, Lou Reed and William S. Burroughs. Still later, throughout the eighties and well into the nineties, Malanga gave the reader a taste of the magical relation of femininity and charm as embodied in his nudes." Signed by Author.
