Rare Presentation Copy of the First Edition, Offprint Issue! - - "Encouraged by Cesare Lombroso, his tutor and contemporary, Angelo Mosso (1846-1910) pursued his studies of emotion and fear and its influence on the heart and respiration with an instrument for measuring blood pressure and pulse change called a "plethysmograph" invented by Francis Franke, which revealed periodic undulations in Mood pressure caused by the respiration cycle. Mosso's studies of the circulation of blood in the brain contributed immensely to the study of the influences of fear (Trovillo 1939). It was Mosso (1878) who first reported experiments in which he observed that the breathing pattern changed under certain stimuli. (Herbold-Wootten 1982)."
