About this Item: Ranelagh Editions, London, 1975, 1975. A 17.5 x 12 inch print, hand-printed at the Officina Bodoni and signed and numbered (475 were printed) by the artist. It was originally commissioned to accompany an anthology of speeches on the theme of European Union (Europe: The Quest for Unity (London: Ranelagh Editions, 1975)), and may be taken to depict an image of hope emerging from a landscape of bodies either dispossessed or slain by war.Insofar as the image is both allegorical and rough-hewn, it is an atypical Annigoni piece. However, its style of draughtsmanship, sense of composition and emphasis upon perspective all pay a marked homage to the Italian Renaissance masters; and a deep allegiance to the techniques of the latter were what, rather than a rejection of abstract art per se, defined Annigoniís unusual place in the story of twentieth century art.A noteworthy image in excellent clean condition. About this Item: Archive of personal and professional correspondence, in English, from the artist, Pietro Annigoni to author and art critic, Robert Wraight. Annigoni (1910-1988) was a fresco and portrait painter from Florence, Italy. His work was influenced by Renaissance painting and he became well known for his portraits of Queen Elizabeth II, John F. Kennedy and other notable people. The collection consists of: 23 hand-written letters, on headed, 6.5x4" notecards from Annigoni. All are signed: Pietro, and one has his full signature. Nearly all are written on both sides (two of which continue on a second notecard) and average between 100-200 words. Nearly all are on the subject of their book, from answering questions through to royalties, and Leslie Frewin is mentioned several times. There are also two pictorial postcards (one of his own work). 36 quarto pages (8x13") of questions and answers. These questions were initially typed by Wraight and answered, in pen, by Annigoni: approx 5000 words. As research for the book, they are all about the artist and cover all aspects of his life and work. Headings include: childhood, marriage, Paul Getty, trip to USA and Mexico, first London trip, painting the Queen, Maharanee of Jaipur and Julie Andrews, and the car crash which killed his friend and disfigured his ear. Also includes: 9.5x7" signed print of a sketch of figures in an Italian town. A quarto, 9 page, uncorrected typed manuscript ĎAnnigoni draws a portrait of Pope John XXIIIí. 6 unused postcards. Humorously annotated photograph of Annigoni and his wife, Rossella. 2 photographs of both men together in Florence. Hand-written paint formula of the Old Masters. 10x7" print by Simone Martini with ink notes and sketches on the reverse. There is also a small collection from his wife, Rossella, after his death: a letter about his death, a Christmas message on one of his greetings cards and an information pack about the (roughly translated) Friends of Annigoni Association for Solidarity among People.
