Manuscript / Paper Collectible Signed
No Binding. Condition: Very Good. Autograph letter signed, 1p. 8vo, [London] (16 Duke Street Mansions), 3 November 1902. "I have so much to attend to just now with rehearsals all day that I fear your Autograph Album might be lost or mislaid if you sent it to the Theatre." But, if she sends it along, he will write his name in it "with pleasure " The "Dear Madam" he addresses was the 15-year-old daughter of a retired licensed victualler, younger sister of the actress Maud Gill (1883-1950), who began her career with Herbert Beerbohm Tree and made her name playing Thirza Tapper in Eden Phillpotts The Farmer's Wife (1916, taking the same role in Alfred Hitchcock's 1928 film). Mabel Hill (1887-1987) married in 1917 John Goss, a musician, and lived to be 100. F. Anstey (né Thomas Anstey Guthrie, 1855 1934) became famous overnight with his first novel, Vice Versa (1882), from reading which Anthony Trollope is said to have died laughing. The play he was rehearsing was Lyre and Lancet at the Royalty Theatre, a dramatisation with Kinsey Peile of Anstey's 1895 novel; it bankrupted the producer, C.B. Cochran. Inscribed by Author(s).
