Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good+. No Jacket. 1st Edition. 484pp., xxiii; black and white photo-illustration of St. Basil and Red Square seen from Sophysk Quay, p. vii; plus two-page black and white map of Soviet Union, following p. xxiii. Introduction (by Walter C. Jaskievicz, S.J.), Preface (by Anthony Vasys), and Table of Contents are in English. Chapter texts and Readings at ends of some chapters are in Russian, but chapters have Russian-English Vocabularies at ends of chapters or Readings (including some poetry); Questions at ends of chapters are in Russian. No jacket. Light blue cloth with dark blue lettering on spine. Perhaps 1/3 of book in all has tiny English words written above Russian words in the text (disproportionately in pencil, with some very Fine-Point,blue ball point pen, mainly scattered through first 3/4 of book); the pencil markings can be erased easily, but, conceivably, best for new owner to decide their fate; very small wear at spine tips, barely divulging gray beneath; teeniest tips of wear at book corners: describes much worse than it is, but there you have it. Binding is still strong (NOT cracked); corners still square; no previous owner names. SOLID COPY. From the Preface: "This Russian Reader is intended to challenge the proficient and to instruct the learner. It has been designed to meet the needs of the broadest possible group of readers, from the intermediate student to the practiced and habitual user of the language. . . The primary purpose of this book is linguistic, and its secondary purpose is cultural, i.e., to introduce the language student--or the curious layman--to the patrimony of Russian civilization: literature, history, art, music, geography, as well as Soviet politics, economy, and education. . . The Reader [this book] is intended as a thesaurus for the student; we hope that it may provide a guide for the teacher. In some classes it will do for readings and for translations; among advanced students, it may give way to analysis and discussion. In order to stimulate this analysis and discussion--both at home and in class--a set of questions has been included at the end of each chapter." (pp. vii-viii).
