About this Item: New York, Editions de la Maison française, 1942. 1 vol. (185 x 230 mm) de 253 pp. et 1 f. About this Item: Reynal & Hitchcock, New York, 1942. Hard Back. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. Lamotte, Bernard (illustrator). Limited Edition. 255 Pages. This limited edition No. 233 of 500 is signed by Antoine de Saint-Exupery (1900-1944) and Bernard Lamotte on the limitation page. Boards are clean with pointed corners. It has a dark blue quarter-spine that shows some wear, particularly at the bottom spine area. Top page edges are gold. Interior text pages are flawless. Slipcase is missing the bottom and the right sides. In addition to being a noted aviator he was a respected author. This is the author's memoir that tells of his time in the French Air Force flying reconnaissance missions during the Battle of France in 1940. He was an older pilot with more than 20 years flying experience at the time. This book condenses months of flights into a single terrifying mission over the town of Arras of France in May 1940 in which seventeen of his fellow crews were sacrificed recklessly, he writes, like glasses of water thrown onto a forest fire. Saint-Exupéry survived the French defeat but refused to join the Royal Air Force over political differences with de Gaulle and in late 1940 went to New York where he accepted the National Book Award for his Wind, Sand and Stars. He remained in North America for two years, and then in the spring of 1943 rejoined his old unit in North Africa. In July 1944 he failed to return from a reconnaissance mission over France. There was much speculation about his disappearance until 2000 when a scuba diver exploring the Mediterranean discovered wreckage that was raised and identified as the author's plane. His previous books were The Aviator (1926), Southern Mail (1929 Novel), Night Flight (1931) (1933 Film John Barrymore, Helen Hayes, and Clark Gable), Wind, Sand and Stars (1939). Flight to Arras (1942) and The Little Prince (1943 Poetic). Size: 6" x 9". Signed by Author and Numbered. Seller Inventory # 18191

About this Item: New York: Reynal & Hitchcock, 1942, 1942. Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles to spine and upper board gilt, pictorial endpapers, top edge dyed blue. With the dust jacket. Spine slightly rolled. An excellent copy in the price-clipped and rubbed jacket with a few chips and closed tears and a small mark at the head of the faded spine panel. 12 plates by Bernard Lamotte. First edition in English, first printing. Signed by the author on the half-title, and inscribed by the illustrator Bernard Lamotte on the same page, "a le Huédé, avec toute mon amitié, Bernard Lamotte". The recipient was Hervé le Huédé, captain of the French luxury liner Normandy, which made its final voyage across the Atlantic in August 1939 and was stranded in New York at the outbreak of war in September. Le Huédé was promoted when the original captain Stephen Payen returned to France, and he served aboard the docked ship until it was requisitioned by the US government in 1941. Saint-Exupery and Lamotte met in art school in France, and during the early 1940s spent a great deal of time together at Lamotte's New York studio, Le Bocal (The Fishbowl). It was here that Saint-Exupery did much of his work for The Little Prince while Lamotte completed the illustrations for this volume. Le Bocal was the social hub for a large group of French expatriates, artists, and celebrities, and it is likely that the stranded captain spent time there. Seller Inventory # 83817

About this Item: Liège: Éditions Dynamo, 1945, 1945. Octavo, pp. 12. Original stitched cream wrappers, titles red and black and multicoloured decoration to front cover. With the glassine jacket. An exceptional copy. First edition, signed limited issue. This is copy number 1, the only copy in the edition printed on Imperial Japon paper, the tête-de-tirage. The whole edition consisted of 49 copies, of which 40 were printed on vélin, 8 on Vélin Chiffon Bleu, and one (the present copy) on japon imperial. The pamphlet was printed in memory of Saint-Exupéry, whose plane had disappeared off the coast of Marseilles on 31 June 1944, and is a short hitherto unpublished account by Saint-Exupéry of his crash on 30 December 1935, when he and his navigator André Prévot were stranded in the Saharan desert for four days near the Nile Delta until they were rescued by a Bedouin. Saint-Exupéry referred to the episode in his autobiographical work Terre des Hommes (Wind, Sand, and Stars in the US), which won him the Grand Prix du Roman de L'Académie française in 1939, and the National Book Award in America. The opening of Le Petit Prince was in part a reference to this experience. Seller Inventory # 109847
