About this Item: Forgotten Books, 2018. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. Excerpt from The First Book of the Anv?ri Suheli: A Literal Translation in English The sole object of this Translation is to help those who are learning Persian, to read the original with such ease, that they shall at once feel the appropriate sense of each word; and shall, imperceptibly, fall into the proper order of arranging the words, and acquire a familiarity with the idiomatic turns of the language. The learner must, however, take the trouble of referring to the Dictionary, for those words of which he does not know the original, as well as the figurative, meaning; and he must be careful to note down every example, where the grammatical construction of Persian differs from that of the Classical Languages: and then he will not find much difficulty in turning such a Translation as this back into Persian. With these objects in View, the Translation has been made as literal as possible; and except where the passage was Very simple, an attempt has been made to represent each separate word of the original, and to place the words, or at least the clauses of each sentence, Very nearly in the order in which they would stand in Persian. And the consequence has been, that the language of the Translation is neither pure nor elegant; and may, in some parts, perhaps, be found incorrect and obscure. About this Item: CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform. Paperback. Condition: New. This item is printed on demand. 196 pages. Dimensions: 10.0in. x 7.0in. x 0.5in.THE BOOK OF ANVARI Translation and Introduction Paul Smith Ahad-ud-din Anvari Abeverdi (1126-1189) was a court poet of the Seljuk sultans. Jami composed a rubai where he names him, along with Firdausi and Sadi as one of the three apostles of Persian poetry. He was also a celebrated astronomer, mathematician and scientist who admitted he gave them up for the more lucrative occupation of a court poet, that he later rejected twenty years before his death for a life of seclusion and contemplation, embracing Sufism. He is renowned for his delightful wittiness that can be found in many of his rubais and qitas and ghazals. He is one of the greatest Persian masters of the qasida and his one called The Tears of Khurasan is considered his masterpieces. He created a new kind of poetry by using the conversational language of his time in simple words and expressions. The correct rhyme-structure has been kept and the beauty and meaning of these unique poems. Introduction 0n his Life and Times and Forms of Poetry in which he wrote. Selected Bibliography. Large Format Book 7 x 10 168 pages. COMMENTS ON PAUL SMITHS TRANSLATION OF HAFIZS DIVAN. It is not a joke. . . the English version of ALL the ghazals of Hafiz is a great feat and of paramount importance. I am astonished. If he comes to Iran I will kiss the fingertips that wrote such a masterpiece inspired by the Creator of all. Dr. Mir Mohammad Taghavi (Dr. of Literature) Tehran.
