Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Illustrations by H. Richard Boehm (illustrator). Glossy frontispiece. This is the sixth Tom Swift adventure, originally copyright 1911. "Very-good" book in a good dust jacket missing bottom inch-and-a-half of jacket spine. This book lists 31 Tom Swift titles (through "His Talking Pictures" (1928) to jacket front flap, but 32 through "His House on Wheels" (1929) to internal ads at rear. We count 11 "Radio Boys" through "Aiding the Snowbound" (1928) to jacket rear flap; jacket rear panel and internal ads both list seven Don Sturdys through "Among the Gorillas" (1927.) We'll presume a publication date of 1929. Unfortunately, it seems to have proven logistically impossible to haul along the always amusing "colored man" Eradicate Sampson and his recalcitrant mule to Earthquake Island, but Howard R. Garis (1873-1962) -- of Uncle Wiggily fame and here writing under the Appleton house name of the Stratemeyer Syndicate -- does manage to give him and the trusty "Boomerang" a brief introductory comic turn, delivering a telegram. Alas, no sign of Koku, the superstitious Argentine giant. 211 pp. Reduced from $37.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Illustrations by H. Richard Boehm (illustrator). The 13th Tom Swift adventure, copyright 1912 though this printing is 1927, "very good" in a good dust jacket with small chips to corners and bottom of jacket spine (including some possible bug erosion, there.) Two previous owners names to Free Front Endpaper -- Eldon Davidson dated 1928 and Joshua Eldred dated April, 1981. This book lists 29 Tom Swift titles through "His Airline Express" (1926) to integral ad pages at rear, but 30 titles through "Circling the Globe" (1927) to jacket front flap. Jacket rear panel lists seven Don Sturdys through "Among the Gorillas" (1927.) Howard R. Garis (1873-1962), of Uncle Wiggily fame and here writing under the Appleton house name of the Stratemeyer Syndicate, retains for comic relief here the unforgettable Eradicate Sampson. And this is the adventure in which Tom and his pals, in the employ of a circus promoter, journey to the jungles of exotic Argentina to capture the giant Koku, whose immigration status must thus remain ambiguous, at best. (After being held captive in the village of the giants for some time, entertaining the natives with his magic tricks, Tom assembles his Wright flyer, the "Lark," and our heroes fly away to freedom.) Glossy frontispiece, no other internal illustrations. 218 pp., followed by 2 pp. publisher's ads. Complete list of G&D juvenile titles to jacket verso in green ink.

First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Illustrations by H. Rudolph Mencl (illustrator). 1st Edition. Third in the series, copyright 1910, and bearing a period gift inscription ("to Vera from Maura") dated Oct. 14th, 1910 in pencil to the blank FFE. The quad-design front board in black and orange is also in the first (1910) style -- the 106 little circles that form the oval around the title & author name are blank (same color as the tan boards), not "colored in." Only the five titles of the TS "starter set" showing to copyright page (though of course that persisted for years), but that page also states "Other volumes in preparation . . . Price, per volume, 40 cents postpaid." Glossy frontispiece by Mencl. No problems with hinges, book will close its own text block, so we'll grade it "very good" despite some ink doodles to FFE and the fact the boards themselves are moderately soiled and have suffered a few dings. NO dust jacket. 216 pp. followed by an ad for all five titles of the Tom Swift series (billed as "A NEW series, certain to attract attention") -- again at 40 Cents per Volume, and then three further pp. of ads, for two volumes of Howard Garis' "Dick Hamilton" series (through "Dick Hamilton's Cadet Days," 1910, but not "Dick Hamilton's Steam Yacht," 1911); for 14 Rover Boys (through "At College," 1910, but not "Down East," 1911), and for the three titles to date of Arthur Winfield's "Putnam Hall" series (through "Putnam Hall Champions," 1908, but not "Putnam Hall Rebellion," 1909. nor "Putnam Hall Encampment," 1910.) Howard R. Garis (1873-1962), of Uncle Wiggily fame and here writing under the Appleton house name of the Stratemeyer Syndicate, retains for comic relief here the unforgettable (and far from "politically correct") Eradicate Sampson and his stubborn mule, Boomerang. Reduced from $180.
