About this Item: Baton Rouge, LA; Shreveport, LA; Nashville, TN; Los Angeles, CA - [Nashville, TN]: The Army and Navy Publishing Company, Inc. - [Benson Printing Co.], 1941., 1941. [4], 104, [8] pages. Hardcover: H 31.25cm x L 23.25cm. Red cloth lightly soiled, slight scuffing at bumped spine ends, light wear at tips of board corners. Toning along edges of endpapers; 1.5cm tear at upper fore-edge margin of front free endpaper. Colorful patriotically illustrated presentation and certification pages precede the book's title page; lines for presentation page remain blank but certification page has ink inscription for Technical Sergeant A.L. Goodman as being a member of Headquarters Battery Second Battalion, 114th Field Artillery as of October 13, 1941 (with Goodman's headshot photo on page 88). A few scattered spots of soiling to interior pages; ink signature of Captain Henry Hunter below portrait headshot on page 87; signatures of four other officers under their respective headshots at top of page 88. Concluding four leaf (i.e. eight page) Autographs/Snapshots section has soiled first leaf with 55 ink signatures and hometown notations by fellow servicemen most of whom hailed from Starkville, Mississippi. Pages are otherwise clean. Binding is firm. Else a very good- copy. Laid-in at front endpapers are {#1} postally unused postcard with b/w photo image titled "Christy Tank ~ Ft. Knox Ky" (#6439 Kirkpatrick 619 W. Wash St. Indianapolis) which is presumably a prewar tank design prototype by J. Walter Christie and {#2} a sheet listing individuals (including organizer Captain Goodman) appearing in a Starkville National Guard unit photo although, unfortunately, the photo itself is not present. Pages 9-10 offer "History of the 31st Division" with lengthier section "The National Guard; A Component of the Army of the United States" on pages 17-40 plus other text and photos regarding the 56th Field Artillery Brigade on pages 41-48. Commanding officer and regimental staff of the 114th Field Artillery on pages 49-53. "History of the 114th Field Artillery" on pages 54-55 with b/w photographs inclusive to page 64; "Personnel 114th Field Artillery" on pages 65-103 feature typical b/w headshots of officers and soldiers seen in other class books or high school annuals and include Headquarters Battery, Band, HQ Battery First Battalion, Service Battery First Battalion, and Batteries A, B, C, and G followed by HQ Second Battalion, Service Battery, and Batteries D, E, F, and H plus Medical Detachment. It is likely that the initial sections were prepared by The Army and Navy Publishing Company as generic boilerplate and replicated in their other class training books for Fort Blanding. However, the relevant text and photos regarding the 114th Field Artillery were obviously prepared specifically for this edition. An interesting record of National Guard troops activated to US Army duty just a few months before America's direct involvement in World War II. Seller Inventory # D17-5224

About this Item: Baton Rouge, LA; Shreveport, LA; Nashville, TN; Los Angeles, CA - [Nashville, TN]: The Army and Navy Publishing Company, Inc. - [Benson Printing Co.], 1941., 1941. [4], 99, [1], [8] pages. Hardcover: H 31.25cm x L 23.25cm. Red cloth soiled, shallow cloth loss at frayed spine ends, scuffing to board corners. Slender brown staining at top edge with interior leaves shallow affected at top margins. Light toning and soiling to front endpapers; stronger foxing and staining to rear endpapers; frequent soiling (fingerprint smudges, etc.) and scattered stains on other interior pages. Colorful patriotically illustrated presentation and certification pages precede the book's title page; lines for presentation page remain blank but certification page has ink inscription for Private William C. McCaa [Jr.] of Aliceville, Alabama as being a member of Battery E, 117th FA [Field Artillery] as of March 4, 1941 (with McCaa's headshot photo on page 93) signed by commanding officer Captain Stanley M. Nash. Concluding four leaf (i.e. eight page) Autographs/Snapshots section is free of any inscriptions. Binding stressed at a few points but is otherwise firm. A good copy. Pages 9-10 offer "History of the 31st Division" with lengthier section "The National Guard; A Component of the Army of the United States" on pages 17-40 plus other text and photos in section titled "Headquarters 56th Field Artillery Brigade Army of the United States Camp Blanding, Florida 1941" on pages 41-48. An interesting record of National Guard troops activated to US Army duty just a few months before America's direct involvement in World War II. Also laid-in at the rear endpapers is an unrelated b/w photo of a children's baseball team circa 1970s. Seller Inventory # D17-5612

About this Item: Baton Rouge, LA; Shreveport, LA; Nashville, TN; Los Angeles, CA - [Nashville, TN]: The Army and Navy Publishing Company, Inc. - [Benson Printing Co.], [copyright 1941 but published 1942]., 1942. [4], 131, [11] pages. Hardcover: H 31.25cm x L 23.25cm. Dark blue cloth rubbed, mild soiling and staining to front board, shallow cloth loss at frayed spine ends, bottom board corners worn with top corners scuffed/nicked. Toning and foxing to initial and rear leaves with some scattered light soiling to interior pages. Colorful patriotically illustrated presentation and certification pages precede the book's title page with all lines still blank (whereas most copies of such class books have handwritten entries for soldier's name, unit membership, training complete date, and a commanding officer signature). Five blank leaves at book's rear usually titled as an Autographs/Snapshots section but not in this class book and no soldier signatures/inscriptions are present. Binding stressed between some quires but still reasonably firm. A good+ copy. Pages 8-10 offer "History of the 43rd Division" followed by extensive b/w photo section "43rd Division in Action" on pages 11-32 with subsections titled as "Camp Buildings," "Familiar Scenes," "Timeout in the 43rd," "Mess Time, "On the Firing Line," "Mighty Monsters of the Artillery," "The Special Units Service the 43rd," etc. Pages 33-37 "169th Infantry 43rd Division, Army of the United States . . ." with b/w photos of Colonel Kenneth F. Cramer and regimental staff. "History of the 169th Infantry" on pages 38-46. Pages 47-62 feature photo essay "169th Infantry in Acton" with various subsections. "Personnel 169th Infantry 43rd Division. Army of the United States. Camp Shelby, Mississippi 1942" on pages 63-130 features typical b/w headshots of officers and soldiers seen in other class books or high school yearbook annuals and include Headquarters Company, Antitank Company, Service Company, Band, First Battalion Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, and Companies A, B, C, and D followed by Second Battalion Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment and Companies E, F, G, and H followed by Third Battalion Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment and Companies I, K, L, M and concluding with Medical Detachment. The Army and Navy Publishing Company, Inc. specifies a 1941 copyright date on page 131 but the book was probably published in the spring of 1942 as the title and several sections reference 1942, page 10 cites the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, and page 45 notes troop arrival at Camp Shelby on February 18, 1942 after training at Camp Blanding Florida and Louisiana and Carolina maneuvers. Thus, despite the erroneous copyright, this is a WWII wartime unit class book rather than a pre-war US Army/National Guard unit book. The 43rd Division (including the 169th) was assigned to the Pacific Theatre and saw action in Guadalcanal, New Guinea, and the Philippines. Seller Inventory # D17-5635
