Su tratado Sobre el alma atrajo poderosamente la atención de los filósofos, haciéndose de él numerosas traducciones al árabe y comentarios, como los de al-Farabi y Avicena en Oriente. Esta obra fue comentada por primera vez en el Occidente islámico durante el siglo xi por el filósofo zaragozano Avempace y luego, en el siglo xii, por el gran pensador cordobés Averroes, quien escribiría tres comentarios siguiendo en parte a Avempace (puede leerse en esta misma colección una selección de ellos en el volumen titulado Averroes, Sobre el intelecto). Avempace, más que un comentario literal, hace aquí una exposición personal, siguiendo el esquema y las ideas generales de Aristóteles. De ella se hizo en 1960 una edición árabe y una traducción inglesa que se basaban sólo en el único manuscrito entonces existente, el de Oxford, pues el de Berlín se había perdido durante la segunda guerra mundial. Pero hallado éste en Cracovia, en 1999 se publicó en Fez una nueva edición árabe basada en ambos manuscritos. Das Erreichen dieses Zieles war dann gleichbedeutend mit der Glückseligkeit. Al-Farabi (850-950) stellt in dem Traktat Über das Erreichen der Glückseligkeit gleich im ersten Satz fest, dass das, wodurch wir zur Glückseligkeit in diesem Leben und im Leben danach gelangen, an erster Stelle theoretische Tugenden sind, denen praktische Tugenden nachgeordnet seien. Avempace (um 1060-1139) hat dieses Ziel in den hier vorgelegten Texten in noch schärferer und ausschließlicherer Form vertreten, und Averroes (1126-1198) hat es dann mit der größten Selbstverständlichkeit übernommen. Dass ein derart primär auf Theorie ausgerichtetes Lebensziel eigentlich der arabischen und islamischen Kultur ziemlich fremd ist, hat keinen dieser Philosophen davon abgehalten, diese Idee zu verfolgen und zu vertreten.
