About this Item: An Old Faithful Book / The American Crayon Company, Sandusky, Ohio, 1943. Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. Illustrated (color and B&W) by Fern Bisel Peat (illustrator). "Copyright, 1931, by Harter Publishing Company / Copyright 1943, by John Sherman Bagg." This is an oversized hardcover book with lovely full-color illustrations (as well as some in B&W) by Fern Bisel Peat. Color illustration of Sambo fastening his red jacket onto the tiger is repeated on both boards and on both front and back panels of DJ. This book is NOT warped, NOT ex-library, NOT stained or dampstained, has NO musty or other odor which we can detect. Book itself grades "good plus" because of substantial shelfwear to bottom edges of boards; dust jacket "fair to good" because of substantial chipping to the edges. In fact, front DJ flap is connected to front panel by only a tenuous two-inch paper strip, which was so weak that we supported it with tape from behind before securing DJ in a (very large) Brodart cover. Book contains only six sheets, miraculously still white. Story, however, occupies 14 pages, with insides of both front and rear boards used as pages in the story. The Sambo story has, of course, long been deleted from anthologies in which it once appeared, on the contention it is "racist." Indeed, Sambo and his parents, Black Mumbo and Black Jumbo, are drawn as American blacks in the "Uncle Remus" tradition, with mom wearing her hair in a kerchief. The meal of pancakes, at the end, is also a cliche of the American South. But the plot -- in which Sambo escapes the tigers by bartering away pieces of his lovely clothing -- in no way depends on any stereotype of black folk being stupid or lazy. In fact, the weirdest thing about this traditional visual take on the tale is that the story is clearly set in INDIA, with its references to tigers and ghi (Indian clarified butter.) Sambo's ornate and colorful clothing, as well, seem more appropriate for a moderately wealthy family living on the subcontinent than for southern, rural, African-Americans. A lovely book, retaining all of its five, full-page, full-color, internal illustrations. Reduced from $125. Seller Inventory # 001242
