Eseri surdururken Ernest Gellner, Charles Larmore, Will Kymlicka, Ebenstein-Fogelman, Hobbsbawn, Edward Hallet Carr'in yani sira Serif Mardin, Ziya Gokalp, Taha Parla, Caglar Keyder, Erol Gungor, Cahit Tanyol ve Prens Sabahattin gibi arastirmacilarin ongorulerinden de destek alindigi gozlemlenebilecektir. Milliyetciligin verili bir teoriden ziyade, devletin gorusleri cercevesinde kuramlastirilmaya calisildigi 1944-1960 yillari arasinda hamasi, asiri-tepkici bir soylem hakimdi. "On-Turkcu" kuramcilar bir yandan milliyetciligi devletten bagimsiz kilmaya calisirken, devletten de tam anlamiyla kopamiyor ve gelisen sosyalizm karsisinda hayli tedirgin davraniyorlardi. 1960-1980'li yillarda ise milliyetci elitlerin nispeten daha sakin, dis kaynaklara fazlasiyla referans yapan bir konumda olduklari gorulur. Ne var ki soz konusu surecte sosyalizmin kitlelere ulasmasi, devlette "sag-sol" kadrolasma savaslarinin doruk noktasina cikmis olmasi, "Ulus-devlet"le milliyetcileri yeni bir "cekinceli ittifaka" itmisti. 1990'li yillarda sosyalizmin cozulmesi, ucuncu kusak milliyetci aydinlarin onunu acti. Artik milliyetcilik gibi "kentli-laik" bir akimi anlatirken, gorece laik politika guduluyor ve devlet gozetilmesi gerektigi oranda dusunuluyordu. Hatta milliyetci kadrolar zaman zaman devletin temel zihniyetini kiyasiya elestirmekte sakinca da gormuyorlardi. Ucuncu kusak milliyetci kuramcilar da, devleti iliskide bulunulan kuramlardan en onemli birisi (fetisizme donusturmemek kaydiyla) olarak ele almak ve devleti yonetecek bagimsiz bir teori-soylemin mutlak islerlik kazanmasi, yeni donemin sayacaklarini anlatiyordu. Yeni kusak milliyetci soylem, pratigin teoriyle yer degistirmesi ve "Teoriden Pratige Milliyetci Hareket"in baslangicinda basrol oynadi.
